Concussion of the brain was induced in female guinea pigs and while pursuing the fine structure of the reticular formation core in the post concussive state the characteristic structure was encountered in the preaxonal ending.1) An honeycomb-like structure about 10-15μ in diameter was formed in it.2) Each core exhibiting elongated hexagonal packing of tubules is formed by the unit membrane 60 Å thick.3) Although mitochondria show a normal structure in the preaxonal ending, no vesicles, glycogen and catecholomine granules were recognized.

It has been considered rather difficult to produce labial or lingual carcinoma by painting the oral mucosa with carcinogenic hydrocarbons. However, the author has succeeded in producing labial and lingual carcinoma in a considerable proportion of the animals by painting the labial mucosa with 4-nitroquinoline N-oxide (4-nitro-quinoline 1-oxide) in propylene glycol. But, this method of producing carcinoma requires considerable time and thus will not meet the needs of the other fields of study. The present experiment was undertaken as a preliminary pilot test to produce lingual carcinoma in a short time.

    1. A case of intra-abdominal Actinomycosis which had initial symptoms of intestinal obstruction due to Blummer's shelf tumor and was diagnosed unexpectedly on re-operation of post-operative ileus is reported.2. When an extrarectal mass (Blummer's shelf) is found, a lesion, of the gastrointestinal tract should be considered.3. Presence of “Sulfur granules” in the pus or tissues of the lesions confirm the diagnosis of Actinomycosis.4. The importance of appendicitis in relation to the occurrence of Actinomycosis was emphasized.5. Early diagnosis and early treatment with adequate surgical drainage and medical therapy may protect the patient from a fatal outcome which was formerly believed to be inevitable in patients with intra-abdominal Actinomycosis.

ECHO 6′ virus produces plaques of 1-2 mm in diameter on MS cell monolayer. The large plaque mutants of 6-10 mm were obtained from the virus passaged in the presence of anti-ECHO 6 serum. This paper compares the various characteristics of the mutants and the small plaque formers including the original ECHO 6′ virus strain. The large plaque mutants were more sensitive to anti-ECHO 6 and 6′ sera than small plaque formers. The mutants began to grow earlier and produced more virus particles than small plaque formers. The effects of certain drugs on plaque formation were examined. MgCl2 and cysteine had no effects except on certain strains. Dextran sulfate promoted the plaque formation in all the strains. A low concentration of sodium bicarbonate promoted the plaque f of mation only in the small plaque formers. The original strain and one small plaque former had the ability of hemagglutination, but one small plaque former and all mutants did not.Comparing the above characteeristics, it is ascertained that the plaque mutation linked to antigenic character but not necessarily to the other characterisitics.
