JOURNAL FREE ACCESSImmunohistological studies were carried out on carcinoma cells of gastrointestinal system. The following results were obtained.1) Gastric mucosal glycoprotein, product of mucous cells in normal gastric mucosa and of Brunner's cells in the duodenum, was present in less or undifferentiated carcinoma cells of gastrointestinal tract but not in well-differentiated ones having the ordered glandular structures.2) Intestinal mucosa-specific mucosal glycoprotein, product of goblet cells in normal intestinal mucosa, was present only in gastrointestinal carcinomas of less orderly arranged glandular structures, similarly to gastric mucosal glycoprotein. It was also present in the intestinalized gastric glands.3) Placental alkaline phosphatase isoenzyme was present in carcinoma cells of both differentiated and undifferentiated type in gastrointestinal tract, but in neither intestinalized cells nor connective tissue components.4) Serum glycoprotein was found to attach firmly to carcinoma cells as “Symbodies”, resulting in the immunological unresponsiveness.5) Crossreacting antigen between gastric tumor and some normal proliferating cells (some lymphocytes of the spleen and bone marrow, and alveolar epithelial cells of the lung) was demonstrated on immunofluorescent tissue preparations.View full abstractDownload PDF (8700K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSNow in Nepal, the Zonal Health Office, District Hospital, Health Centre and Health Post will be organized as medical institutions expanded from central to peripheral; there are already some United Mission Hospitals, and Ayurvedic Aushadhalayas come down from remote antiquity. On the other hand, the National Tuberculosis Control Project, Central Health Laboratory, Leprosy Service, Malaria Eradication Projects etc., are already working for health promotion covering all over Nepal, with an emphasis on public health.The Japanese Medical Cooperation Team will carry out the tuberculosis control and the health laboratory development in the Western Region in cooperation with the various authorities concerned with the Health Services in Nepal.View full abstractDownload PDF (1496K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSA concrete strategy for Tuberculosis control programme on the total population of 280, 000 in Syanja District of Gandaki Zone, Nepal, was discussed.The programme, manned by 25 members, started October 17, 1976, will be enforced on the following items until April 12, 1977.1. BCG vaccination of children under 15 years of age (Direct Vaccination).2. Case finding by direct smear examination of sputum and the medical treatment of patient found.The levels of prevention of Tuberculosis in developing countries, like Nepal, are of course not necessary to be relied on the sophisticated latest medical technology. Smear test of sputum for example will be done before chest X-ray examination can be carried out.In a country where the budgetary allowances can not allocate periodical chest X-ray examination, the mass vaccination of BCG to the young population and case finding survey followed by sputum examination will be most suitable and pertinent levels of application in preventing Tuberculosis infection.View full abstractDownload PDF (768K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSIn a patient with Wilson's disease presented transient acute hemolytic episodes twice, hematologic investigations and copper studies were performed at the time of each hemolytic episode. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSAs an adjuvant procedure of operation, topical administration of emulsionized Bleomycin to metastatic lymph nodes was carried out in order to support surgical dissection.Tracers were administered before operation and uptake in regional lymphnodes was measured. Uptake of the tracer was sufficient and degenerative changes of cancer cells in lymph nodes were also recognized histologically. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSAdministering Baclofen, a psychotropic drug in daily doses of 5 mg to 45 mg for 3 to 11 weeks to 10 cases of schizophrenia whose duration of illness is 5.4 years on the average, we made observations on the clinical course.As to therapeutic effects, symptoms remained unchanged in nine cases and became aggravated in one case.Electroencephalographic examinations showed no tendency to improvement.Discussion in reference to literature was held on the relationship between GABA and the DA metabolism and also application of Baclofen to schizophrenia.View full abstractDownload PDF (687K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSUltraviolet (UV) exposure of a homogenate of guinea pig epidermis resulted in the release of acid hydrolases from the 20, 000×g pellet fraction into the medium. Release of enzymes such as acid phosphatase, acid DNase, β-glucuronidase was dependent on the radiant energy of UV light. These enzymes could be released or inactivated by varying the dose of UV energy. Both the biochemical facts and the electron microscopic examination suggested that the 20, 000×g pellet associated with lysosome-rich fraction. The in vitro incubation of homogenates or 20, 000×g pellet with steriodal and non-steriodal anti-inflammatory agents prior to UV exposure significantly reduced the relase of acid phosphatase. Fluocinonide, betamethasone and fluocinonide acetonide were all found to be effective: however, the latter was the least active. Indomethacin was not as effective as the more active corticosteroids.View full abstractDownload PDF (2890K)
