The stromal surface of the myoepithelial cells of normal and contracting status in the rat Harderian gland has been studied by SEM after removal of the connective tissue elements by HC1 and collagenase. The flattened myoepithelial cell has an elongated central perikaryon from which radiate out 6 to 9 broad primary processes bifurcating two or three times to produce a total complement of 15 to 28 terminal ones per cell, each 1 to 2.5.μ wide. The terminal processes are contiguous with those of adjacent myoepithelial cells to grasp the alveolus in the fashion of a network. They mostly meet end to side or end to end and occasionally overlap each other. After injection of acetylcholine, the myoepithelial cells had prominent irregular folds squeezing the alveoli probably due to contraction of them.

Effects of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and dibutyryl cyclic adenosine monophosphate (dbc AMP) on the Na+ -K+ pump of cell membrane were studied by testing the effects of these nucleotides on the 22Na+-efflux from frog skeletal muscle fibres. The rate coefficient of 22Na+-efflux was found to be significantly increased by ATP 3 mM. Dbc AMP 3 mM showed no demonstrable effect. These results support the concept that ATP facilitates the electrogenic Na+ pump, but do not support the concept that the electrogenic Na+ pump is stimulated by cyclic AMP.

Effects of atropine on nicotinic transmission in bullfrog sympathetic ganglia were examined by the intracellular microelectrode technique. The fast excitatory postsynaptic potential (fast EPSP) of ganglion cells recorded in Ca2+ -deficient solution is depressed in the presence of atropine (3-30μM). The mean amplitude of fast EPSP is decreased to about 60% of normal with 30μM atropine. The quantal content calculated from these fast EPSPs by the variance method increases in the presence of atropine to 160% of normal with 30μM atropine. The amplitude of fast ACh-potential decreases to about 30% of normal, and that of miniature EPSPs decreases to about 35% of normal in the presence of atropine (30μM). Thus, it seems that atropine facilitates the evoked release of ACh from preganglionic nerve terminals in sympathetic ganglia.

It is well-known that administration of isoproterenol (IPA) produces the infarct-like cardiomyopathy to experimental animals. To confirm the biochemical change in energy metabolism of heart mitochondria isolated from rat treated with IPA, the oxygen consumption, lipid peroxide content and CoQ content were determined. The lipid peroxide content was significantly increased in the IPA-treated animals. The respiratory responses of mitochondria indicated the uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation . The combination use of CoQ-10 with IPA could reduce the lipid peroxidation and respiratory disorders induced by IPA. CoQ homologue level of mitochondria was determined by the method of high pressure liquid chromatography. It was revealed that the deficiency of CoQ homologue was not induced by IPA administration. These studies suggested that lipid peroxidation induced by IPA plays a major role in the development of cardiomyopathy and is prevented by co-administration of CoQ-10.

A 31-year-old Japanese female, gravida 4, para 0, who had previously experienced three spontaneous abortions during 7 th or 8 th month of gestation was diagnosed with intrauterine fetal death at 26th weeks of gestational age. Investigations for maternal and fetal etiologies, including toxemia, incompatibility of blood groups and types, and infections, proved negative. Anoxia which resulted in the demise of the fetus is believed to have been responsible for the rare combination of extensive placental infarction in an asymptomatic gravid woman.

A 41-year-old male who experienced right lower quadrant pain revealed an ileocecal tumor on barium enema. This tumor occupied inner half of cecal wall, protruded into the lumen and changed shape and size on compression. Tumor size was 6.7 ×5.0 ×3.0 cm, extending from the submucosa to the serosa. Histologically this tumor was diagnosed as cystic lymphangioma.

A male child, born by normal spontaneous vaginal delivery, was noted to have a soft tumor, in the shape of an “elephant's nose, with a diameter of 2.5 cm×2.5 cm and 5.5 cm long in the inter-orbital region. With the diagnosis of naso-frontal type of fronto-ethmoidal encephalomeningocele with congenital hydrocephalus, corrective surgery was performed in two stages. At the first operation, a ventriculoperitoneal shunt and bilateral frontal craniectomy were performed, and closed with frozen human dura mater intracranially. Twenty days after the first operation, the encephalomeningocele was excised. The patient tolerated the surgery well.

Sixty-one long-term hemodialysis patients were inoculated with influenza vaccine. Antibody responses measured by hemagglutination inhibition test were comparable to that of controls. Side reactions of vaccination were similar to controls in frequency and severity. No adverse effects were observed in the clinical course of inoculated hemodialysis patients. Influenza vaccination can be recommended for annual immunization of hemodialysis patients as a group at high risk from influenza infection.

Ventro-dorsal internal diameter of the canine left ventricle, the left ventricular and aortic pressure, and electrocardiogram were recorded simultaneously to measure the various systolic time intervals. Systolic time intervals related to isometric contraction time and ejection time shortened with increased heart rate and lengthened with elevation of left ventricular pressure. The onset of the shortening of internal diameter occurred 31.57±10.08 milliseconds, with a range of 0 to 48 milliseconds before the onset of the upstroke of aortic pressure. End-systole, defined as the shortest internal diameter, occurred 12.82±5.51 milliseconds, with a range of 4 to 27 milliseconds, before end-ejection, defined as the dicrotic notch of the aortic pressure. Dynamic geometry during isovolumetric contraction, the differences between the phases of end-systole and end-ejection, and the artifact of microtip manometer are discussed.
