Acute Anterior Uveitis (AAU) is associated with numerous autoimmune diseases, in particular, ankylosing spondylitis (AS). AAU has also been shown to be associated with HLA-B27 antigen. The immune response of AAU patients is hypothesized to cross-react with Klebsiella pneumoniae and correlate with the presence of the B27 antigen. We were unable to demonstrate this cross-reactivity in our sample of AAU patients. However, we did find an increased immune complex level in those patients which was independent of the B27 antigen. The role of Klebsiella in these disease states remains unclear although AAU is in some way associated with AS.

Experimental central serous chorioretinopathy was produced in the both eyes of the crab-eating monkey by repeated intravenous adrenaline and intramuscular prednisolone injections. Fluorescein angiography provided further confirmation for the clinical conformity of our animal model to human central serous chorioretinopathy. However, there appears to be no distinct effect of systemic corticosteroid administration on adrenaline-induced central serous chorioretinopathy.

Eight chronic schizophrenic patients, free from neuroleptics for more than one month, and seven normal adults were administered a daily dose of haloperidol, 3mg, orally for one week. The major metabolite of noradrenaline (NA), 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylethyleneglycol sulfate (MHPG-SO4), was measured fluorometrically in sera before and after the drug administration to examine brain NA metabolism. Serum MHPG-SO4 levles in chronic schizophrenics were significantly lower than normal adults before drug ingestion. Although single administration of haloperidol failed to affect MHPG-SO4 levels in both groups, repeated administrations of the drug for one week significantly decreased the metabolite levels in both groups. However, no difference was observed between two groups in the percent decrease of MHPG-SO4 levels after repeated administrations of the drug. These data suggest that brain NA metabolism may be different in chronic schizophrenics compared to that in normal adults.

A TRH analog, (γ-butyrolactone-γ-carbonyl-L-histidyl-L-pro-linamide citrate) was effective in improving myoclonus, cerebellar symptoms and psychic activity in one case of degenerative myoclonus epilepsy. The drug was found to exert an excellent effect on psychic activity, in-cluding volition and motivation. The drug also proved to have antimyoclonic and cerebellar symptom-improving actions. The drug markedly inhibited activation of paroxysmal discharges with photic stimulation, and completely eliminated the intermixing EMG from the basic pattern. The effects appeared after 3 to 4 days of treatment, and persisted for 30 to 40 days after withdrawal.

Six young adult males were exposed to 10°C ambient temperature for 2 hours by day and by night. Measurements were made of metabolic heat production, mean skin temperature and rectal temperature. At 28°C, prior to cold exposure, skin and rectal temperatures tended towards lower and higher values by day than by night, while the difference in heat production was equivocal between day and night. At 10°C, mean skin temperature and heat production tended to increase by day. A significantly higher rectal temperature was observed in the cold as well as a higher initial rise by day than by night. Changes of heat production, mean skin temperature and rectal temperature at 10°C with respect to those at 28°C were evaluated by three dimensional analysis. There were significant effects both for circadian and individual variations. Individual variation was more consistent than circadian variation according to F ratio. The ratio of the increase in heat production to the decrease in mean skin temperature was also statistically higher by day than by night. These results are attributable to the increased lower critical skin temperature and set point or reference temperature in the central nervous system by day. Circadian variation in response to cold corresponds to adapta tional alteration among individuals and ethnic groups, i. e. metabolic type by day and insulative or habituative type by night.

Rats were given d-amphetamine alone, placebo or d-amphetamine and food. They were then placed in the activity-stress ulcer paradigm, involving continuous access to a running wheel while being fed for only 1 hr. per day. Animals given d-amphetamine only ran more and died significantly sooner than animals in any other group. These rats also displayed significantly more gastric glandular ulcers than rats in any other group. Rats given d-amphetamine and food exhibited increased running but did not die sooner and displayed ulceration comparable to placebo rats. It appears that neither restricted feeding nor increased running wheel activity is a sufficient cause of activity-stress ulcers; rather, the combined interaction. of both of these variables appears to produce the observed gastric damage.

Prevalence of anti-S. japonicum antibodies in persons living in the Chikugo River basin, Kyushu, previously an endemic area of schistosomiasis japonica, was investigated by circumoval precipitin (COP) and indirect haemagglutination (IHA) tests. Of 327 specimens of sera collected, 51 (15.6 %) and 112 (34.3 %) were positive by COP and IRA tests, respectively. Reactivities of the COP test were predominantly weak and 82.1 % of IHA-positive sera were of low titers-1:40 to 1:80. Between the results of COP and IHA tests no relation was observed. When indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) test was applied to randomly sampled 67 sera, using S. japonicum adult worms fixed with Rossman's fixative higher concordance (64.2 %) was observed between IFA and IHA tests in comparison to that (32.8 %) between IFA and COP tests. However, the relationship between results of IFA and IHA tests was not statistically significant. The differences among the results obtained by those serological tests are believed to result from differences in antigen components as well as by the low levels of antibody titers. The results show that anti-S. japonicum antibodies are still prevalent in this district, but since most sera tested are only slightly positive, active infection with S. japonicum is not apparently a problem at present.

Myoepithelial cells (MECs) of the mammary glands of rats, at 10 and 18 days of pregnancy and at 10 days of lactation, were examined under scanning electron microscopy. Generally, MEC presents an elongated cell body and a few cytoplasmic processes forming a basket-like network around the acinar endpiece. Single acinar endpieces are surrounded by 4 to 5 MECs during both pregnancy and lactation. As pregnancy advances, cell belies and processes of MECs become extended and slender. Regarding the processes, the number of primary processes remains unchanged, but the number of secondary and tertiary processes increases moderately. The network of MECs around the acinar endpieces becomes denser and finer at the end state of pregnancy. MECs of lactating mammary glands show slightly bulged cell bodies and processes toward the surrounding connective tissues. The relative surface area covered by MECs per acinar endpiece does not vary greatly, ranging f rom25 to 29 % during states of pregnancy and lactation.

The relationship between the increase in noradrenaline (NA) turnover and endogenous opioid peptides in the hypothalamus under stressful situations was investigated in rats using a specific antagonist of opioids, naloxone. Male Wistar rats were injected subcutaneously with saline, naloxone at 1 mg/kg or 5 mg/kg 10 min before exposure to immobilization stress for 1 hour. Levels of NA and its major metabolite, 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenyl-ethyleneglycol sulfate (MHPG-SO4) in the hypothalamus were determined fluorometrically. Immobilization stress caused both significant decrease in NA level and increase in MHPG-SO4 level in rats treated with saline, naloxone at 1 mg/kg and 5 mg/kg in comparison to controls. In spite of the finding that 5 mg/kg of naloxone by itself significantly reduced hypothalamic NA level, pretreatment with 5 mg/kg of the drug significantly enhanced both the decrease in NA level and increase in MHPG-SO4 level induced by stress. Enhancement of the stress-induced increase in the hypothalamic NA turnover is believed to be due to blockade of opiate receptors by the drug. These results suggest that endogenous opioid peptides in the hypothalamus might be partially involved in stress process by attenuating the increase in NA turnover induced by stress.

Male Wistar rats were exposed to immobilization stress and changes in rectal temperature and incidence of gastric lesions were examined. Rectal temperature in immobilized rats significantly decreased within 2 hours of immobilization and the significant decrease continued up to 24 hours of immobilization. Hypothermia induced by stress rapidly recovered to control levels when the rats were released from 18-hours of immobilization. Based on macroscopical occurrence of gastric lesions after exposure to immobilization stress for 12 hours, rats were divided into two groups, i. e., affected or non-affected rats by gastric lesions. When examined retrospectively, the former showed significantly lower rectal temperatures than the latter. Pretreatment with a synthesis inhibitor of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT), p-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA) at 250 mg/kg completely abolished the stress-induced hypothermia. This suggests that stressinduced hypothermia may be mediated by the brain's 5-HT system.

This report investigates the right atrial component of the impedance cardiogram (IC) to quantitatively assess right atrial performance under spontaneous respiration, different degrees of the Valsalva maneuver, epidural anesthesia and intravenous administration of vasopressors. In this study, a dog model served to demonstrate the correlation between impedance cardiographic change waveforms, and the enlarged waveforms of right atrial pressure (RaP) and diameter (RaD). A clinical study was then carried out on surgical patients in the recovery room to provide quantitative data on cardiodynamic correlations between the “A wave” of IC and clinical indices of right atrial function obtained by electromechanical analysis of RaP. In conclusion, impedance cardiography is a non-invasive method which simultaneously gives information about variation in venous return and/or changes in cardiac performance due to right atrial contraction and cardiac output. We believe that it is a valuable monitoring tool for ongoing determinations of cardiac function with venous return mechanism.
