    1. Synaptic potentials were recorded in identified extraocular motoneurons in the anesthetized cat, following stimulation of the horizontal canal nerve (HCN). 2. Weak stimulation of the HCN evoked disynaptic EPSPs in ipsilateral medial rectus (i-MR), contralateral lateral rectus (c-LR) and disynaptic IPSPs in i-LR motoneurons. 3. Weak stimulation of the HCN produced longer latency IPSPs (probably trisynaptic) in c-MR motoneurons. It is suggested that the HCN projects to an excitatory interneuron in the vestibular nucleus whose axon in turn projects to a third order inhibitory interneuron in the IIIrd nucleus which finally projects to c-MR motoneurons. 4. Essentially there is no influence of the HCN stimulation on bilateral superior rectus (SR), inferior rectus (IR), superior oblique (SO) and inferior oblique (IO) motoneurons.

A 24 year-old female was involved in an automobile acccident and sustained rupture of the left hemidiaphragm, longitudinal lacerations of the right lower extremity and open fracture of the right femur. An early surgical intervention was undertaken to repair the diaphragmatic ruptures through left thoracotomy. The left hemidiaphragm was ruptured at two separate locations. The larger opening was measured to be 13 cm in length and the smaller one was 3 cm. Through the larger opening stomach and omentum herniated into the left thoracic cavity. The larger opening was approximated using non-absorbable sutures in a row and the suture line was also covered by the portion of the diaphragm. The smaller hole was closed with interrupted sutures and coverage of Marlex Mesh. Her postoperative course has been uneventful up to the present at five months postoperative.

The responses of neck and forelimb muscles to sinusoidal polarization of the horizontal canal nerve were compared by recording from these muscles simultaneously. Contrary to results on the vestibulocollic reflex, the central phase lagin the vestibulo-forelimb reflex increases with increasing frequencies up to 3 Hz. This demonstrates a difference in the organization of vestibular-driven pathways to neck and forelimb muscles.

Small pocks was eradicated and regular immunization against it has been stopped since 1978. Then the vaccine against pertussis became the only one which has high frequency of side reactions. This vaccine has been started to use after several blank yeares to 2-4 yeares old children in the fear of the side reactions. There are many notes wanting the safty improved vaccine for preventing pertussis of infant, and a new improved component vaccine has been deviced. I reported here the results of the side reactions of current DPT vaccine and of new improved pertussis component vaccine. The frequency of elevation of body temperature after 1st, 2nd, 3rd immunization was 17.5%, 16.7%, 19.5% respectively, and of local redness was 22.2%, 30.4%, 27.5%, induration was 25.0%, 17.4%, 27.5% respectively. On the other hand, for the new vaccine the rate of fever was only 2%.

To obtain specific antiserum to human kidney β-glucuronidase, a separation of the antigen as the purified enzyme was attempted. In the process, the homogenate of the kidney was first mixed and stirred with equal volume of chloroform before the centrifugation to take uppermost water layer and discarding the rest. This layer was then salt-fractionated, sieved by Sephadex G200 and separated by DEAE-Cellulose column chromatograpy, under the monitoring by the enzyme assay, to reach a homogeneity by DISC electro-phoresis. The antibody, obtained by the immunization of the rabbits was shown to make single and discrete precipitation line by double immunodiffusion against both crude and the above purified kidney extracts. As the presented method for β-glucronidase extraction seems to be simpler than the ones reported prior to this, authors introduced the benefits of the chloroform treatment of the kidney extract likewise the present knowledge concerning about the histopathologic significance of the enzyme in various pathologic conditions.

Leucocyte adherence inhibition (LAI) technique using nylon fiber column was applied to the diagnosis of pancreatic carcinoma and hepatocellular carcinoma. Tumor extracts (antigens) were prepared by homogenizing tumor tissue and stored at -20℃. Leucocyte-rich cell suspension (LRS) was prepared from heparinized venous blood. Nylon fiber weighing 65 mg was packed into 1 ml syringes having diameter of 5 mm. The length of packed column was adjusted to 17 mm. For the determination of adherence mixtures of LRS and tumor extracts, or PBS as control, were incubated for 30 min at 37℃. Then 1 ml of aliquots of the mixtures were added to the tops of syringes and allowed to filter through the columns over 5 to 10 minutes. All assays were done in triplicate. The numbers of the granulocytes in the original mixtures and in the effluents were counted, and the percentage of granulocytes adhered wasc alculated. The ratio of % adherence incubated with antigen to that of control sample was defined as LAI index. Mean LAI index of 20 patients with carcinoma of the pancreas was 0.73±0.19, which was significantly less than 0.93±0.08 of normal subjects (p<0.01). When the indices were less than 0.77 (mean LAI index of control group-2 SD), LAI tests were difind as positive. Thirteen of 20 cases (65.0%) showed positive results. False positive results were seen in 3 cases (carcinoma of the duodenum, renal cell carcinoma and pseudocyst of pancreas). Mean LAI index of 20 cases with hepatcellular carcinoma was 0.58±0.23, which was significantly less than 0.79±0.11 of 11 normal control cases (p<0.01). Positive results, indices less than 0.57, were obtained in 11 of 20 cases with hepatocellular carcinoma. No false positive case was seen. The LAI test is a reliable technique for the diagnosis of pancreatic carcinoma and hepatocellular carcinoma.

This is a case study of 31-year-old Japanese male who expired due to hepatocellular carcinoma with metastasis to the meninx, vertebra and spinal cord at the height of 3rd lumbar vertebra. He was well until a couple days prior to his first visit to our out-patient clinic when he experienced a severe ischialgia. Laboratory examinations on admission and thereafter suggested moderate hepatocellular abnormality as positive HBsAg, positive AFP, hepatomegaly due to space occuping lesion with hypervascularity and A-V shunt by scinti-and angio-graphies. He kept complaining of ever-increasing ischialgia which was diagnosed as due to hepatocellular carcinoma metastasis to the meninx and spinal cord at the region described as above. He took a gradual down-hill course to death, developing jaundice, ascites and vesico-rectal disturbances. The autopsy confirmed the carcinoma metastasis to the above region which was the cause of the peculiar and complicated clinical signs and symptoms in this case. Scince the case belongs to the rare case characterized by hepatoma metastasis to the spinal cord. We reported the case study with related discussions.
