1. Synaptic potentials were recorded in identified extraocular motoneu-rons in anesthetized cats, following stimulation of ampullary nerves of the anterior and posterior semicircular canals. 2. Superior rectus motoneurons received disynaptic EPSPs and IPSPs following stimulation of the bilateral ampullary nerves of the anterior and posterior semicircular canals, respectively. In the inferior rectus motoneurons, the effects of anterior and posterior semicircular canal stimulation were a mirror image of those on superior rectus motoneurons. 3. Inferior oblique motoneurons developed disynaptic EPSPs and IPSPs following stimulation of the ampullary nerves of contralateral anterior and ipsilateral posterior semicircular canals, respectively. In addition, some inferior oblique motoneurons displayed disynaptic IPSPs following stimulation of the contralateral ampullary nerve of the posterior semicircular canal. In the superior oblique (trochlear) motoneurons, disynaptic EPSPs and IPSPs were recorded after stimulation of the contralateral posterior and ipsilateral anterior semicircular canals, respectively. 4. There was no significant connection between the ampullary nerves of the vertical semicircular canals and motoneurons innervating lateral and medial rectus muscles.

In studying medical terms etymologically, there has hitherto been a general tendency to discuss etymology within the limits of Greek and Latin only. The author tried to enlarge the scope of such discussions of English medical terms through achievements of the Indo-European comparative linguistics. In the present report, the author thereby tried to broaden and also deepen the knowledge of medical English through the comparative study of cognate relationships between medical terms of Greek-Latin origin and English words of Germanic origin in accordance with the law of Indo-European sound correspondences. This method of studying Indo-European cognate words shed a new light on complicated medical terminology, and was helpful in understanding medical English from a simply fundamental viewpoint-namely, from Proto-Indo-European common roots.

This study is to attempt the noninvasive measurement of P-V relation in the venous system of human forearm segments through a simultaneous measurement of electrical admittance and cuff pressure change following venous occlusion in 36 healthy subjects (29 males and 7 females ; 20-46 years old). Firstly, volume changes measured by an admittance (⊿V_Y) and a coven-tional type of water-displacement plethysmography (⊿V) were compared. The correlation coefficient and linear regression equation were r=0.986 and ⊿V_Y=0.920 ⊿V+0.44, respectively, and 91.9% of total data (n=242) were within±20% error range. Secondly, venous pressure change measured by inserting hypodermic needle into the vein (⊿P_V) were compared with cuff-pressure changes (⊿P_<cuff>). The results were r=0.967 and P_V=0.790 P_<cuff>+3.55, and 96.4% of the total data (n=192) were within±20% error range. It is suggested through these results that P-V relation in the venous system can be noninvasively determined by the simultaneous measurement of electrical admittance and cuff-pressure in human limb segments.

The patients with herpetic neuralgia, reflex symapathetic pain syndrome & cancer pain treated by transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), neurotropin, cycrocytidine, alplostadil injection combined with epidural (ganglion) block therapy or intravenous regional anesthesia (IVRA). Pain intensity, asthenia & anxiety state was rated by using verbal analog scale. Pain relief was excellent in herpetic neuralgia and the transmission to post-herpetic neuralgia could be prevented during three to five days of the onset of eruption while the same effect of the treatment was not obtained thereafter. The asthenic & anxiety state with cancer pain responded well to TENS, high doses neurotropin injection and nerve blocking therapy. Post traumatic dystrophies, reflex sympathetic pain syndrome and vasospastic disease of the extremity were relieved by neurotropin and al prostadil intravenous injection combined with IVRA.

The factors which influence on platelets aggregation were investigated by the turbidometric method. The subjects were healthy volunteers 33 males and 57 females. Their median age was 33 years with a range from 21 to 85 years. Aggregation parameter was expressed by maximum aggregation rate. Platelets aggregation was measured by classifying ADP's concentration into three groups (I. 1.15×10^<-5>M, II. 5.7×10^<-6>M, III. 2.6×10^<-6>M). Platelets aggregation was reduced with the lowering of ADP's concentration (P<0.01). Aggregation pattern of group III was different from the other two groups, and showed various patterns. As for platelets aggregation (ADP concenration of 2.9×10^<-6>M), our result showed no statistically significant difference in meal, age, sex, smoking, character and family history.

An apparatus by a combination of atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS) and high performance aqueous gel permeation chromatograph (HPAGPC) was developed and it was used a clinical diagnosis of anemia associated with some metal elements (Fe, Cu and Zn) in serum and/or blood as an application to a medical field. The diagnosis was investigated on their chromatograms showing the molecular weight distributions of some metal containing compounds in serum and/or blood and this proposed method was a new approach to a clinical diagnosis of human diseases. Separation of metal containing compounds in serum and/or blood was effected on one G 4000 SW column, two G 3000 SW columns and one G 2000 SW column (Toyo Soda, Tokyo) connected in series using pH 7.3, 1/15 M phosphate buffer solution as the mobile phase. AAS was also used for the high sensitive detection to their metal containing compounds. The detection limit, the analytical time and the precision by the proposed method were 10^<-7> M, within 90 min and within 2 % in terms of coefficient of variation, respectively. Therefore, their metal containing compounds could be effectively determined for the clinical diagnosis of the human diseases by the proposed method. A clinical diagnosis of anemia by determination of their chromatograms of the metal containing compounds was mede simpler, more effective and easier in comparison with that by the usual method for which serum iron and total iron binding capacity and/or unsaturated iron binding capacity were determined and compared. Furthermore, several new peaks of metal containing com-pounds were detected by the present method and their peaks were also useful for the diagnosis of anemia. The same results s above mentioned about iron containing compounds were obtained by the measurements of their chromatograms of copper and zinc containing compounds in serum.

The staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) is generally recognized to be caused by phage group II Staphylococcus through the production of an exfoliating exotoxin, exfoliatin A. A case of SSSS with atypical clinical features and progress, possibly due to exfoliatin B elaborated by staphylococci of phage group I -52, has recently been experienced at our clinic. Clinical findings in the case suggested sym-tomatologic discrepancy between SSSS due to exfoliatin B of phage group I staphylococci and that evoked by the exfoliating toxin from the phage group II organism. The patient, a five-year old boy, developed the disease with intensely pruritic erythemas. Desquamation of the skin of the trunk, pain on rubbing in erythematous lesions and dermatitis of the perioral and the nostrils regions were extremely mild. The patient was discharged much improved on the fifth hospital day. The skin of fingers and palms began exfoliating about 5 days after the discharge. The patient's condition was atypical in respect of the severe pruritus desquamation and subsequent membranous digital and palmar exfoliation. The case seems to be worthy of note as it suggested differences in clinical features between SSSS caused by exfoliatin A and that by exfoliatin B.

A 32-year-old man developed motor and sensory disturbances of the limbs accompanied by albuminocytologic dissociation in CSF and high measles antibody titer in serum. Frequent painful muscle cramps which are rare in acute polyradiculoneuropathy occurred in the convalescent stage. Ischemic exercise of the foerarm muscles resulted in normal elevation of serum lactic acid. Nerve conduction velocity was decreased in the lower limbs, namely 39.3 m/sec and 36.5 m/sec in the tibial nerve MCV and sural nerve SCV, respectively. EMG revealed neurogenic pattern. Superficial EMG manifested abnormal continuous discharges on repetitive stimulation of the left ulnar nerve. Although muscle cramps occurred even after a pharmacological block of the ulnar nerve, there was a possibility remained that the block itself might be insufficient. Carbamazepine showed a slight effect in the reduction of muscle cramps. Muscle cramps are well known in McArdle's disease, stiff-man syndrome, Satoyoshi's disease, syndrome of continuous muscle fiber activity (Isaacs) and tetany. But our case is different from these disorders. Since this rare phenomenon was observed only in the period of recovery from acute polyradiculoneuropathy, it was suggested that some abnormalities related to the process of reinnervation caused an overactivity of α-motoneuron.

In recent years the frequency of an acute transient or permanent deterioration in renal function associated with drip infusion pyelography (DIP) or other radiologic procedures using contrast materials has increased and is called "contrast nephropathy". A case of contrast nephropathy was described. DIP was performed in a patients, 38 years old female, with compensated chronic renal failure. On the next day of this procedure the urine volume decreased and BUN and serum creatinine level markedly elevated. The deterioration in renal function recovered completely after 20 days by substitution of electrolyte fluids and diet therapy. Risk factors causing contrast nephropathy were discussed in this paper. Since it becomes increasingly important to use contrast materials, such as CT enhancement or arteriography, the indication of the use of contrast materials should be cautiously decided by weighing the benefit of such procedures against the risk of renal injury.
