Hyaluronic acid (HA), type IV collagen 7S domain (7S), and N-terminal peptide of type III procollagen (PBIP) were determined as serum markers for hepatic fibrosis in patients with chronic liver disease type C; and their relationship with several hepatic function tests and disease state, as well as the usefulness of these makers in differentiating chronic hepatitis and liver cirrhosis were evaluated. A satisfactory correlation was found among these serum markers for hepatic fibrosis. As for the liver function tests, correlations were also found between these markers and albumin, cholinesterase or the ICG test. The HAI score was well-correlated with the category of hepatic fibrosis. The content of each serum maker for hepatic fibrosis increased with the advance in disease state, with a significant increase in liver cirrhosis in comparison with chronic hepatitis. The cut off points to differentiate liver cirrhosis from chronic hepatitis were HA: 130ng/ml; 7S: 8.0 ng/ml; and PIIIP 1.5 U/ml ; and their accuracies were 81.7%, 83.6%, and 69.6%, respectively. We believe that the serum markers for hepatic fibrosis in patients with chronic liver disease type C constitute effective indicators in differentiating chronic hepatitis from liver cirrhosis.

The thin flap has come to be widely used clinically as a skin autograft in the last few years. However, the mechanism which makes its survival possible and the angioarchitectural accomodation to assist that have been poorly understood partially due to the absence of its suitable experimental model. The aims of present study, therefore, were firstly to know whether the hereby proposed rat skin flap without panniculus carnosus is appropriate as the experimental model and secondly to report the accomodation mechanism of its vasculature to new environment after the flap was planted. These were analyzed by the aid of angiography. As the result, the vasculature of panniculus carnosus (PC) containing tigroidal arterioles and venules in the rat corresponded with the subdermal plexus of human, indicating the equivalency of the rat skin flap raised above PC which the author wishes to propose as the experimental model and the thin flap of human. The angiographic analysis of the flap after the plantation revealed that the dilatation in general, of arterioles leaving the unremarkable original vasculature and the selective dilatation of venules with its bypasses along the axis of the flap took place from the third postoperative day. Those indicated that the changes in the routes of venous perfusion is crucial to the survival of thin flap irrespective of the direction of the flap.

The purpose of the present study is to investigate the relationship between the amenity in the oral cavity (chewing ability with their own or artificial teeth, and the quantity of food intakes) and each of psychological or physical state in the aged. Study subjects (n=67, 15 males, 52 females) in age from 63 to 91 years, living at the nursing home, were directly interviewed, using a questionnaire on their life style, their dental health especially on artificial teeth, and their feeling about healthiness and anxiety through State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Their blood pressure and vital capacity as an index of physical state were investigated from their annual health checkrecord. The following findings emerged by statistical analysis : Irrespective of own teeth or artificial teeth, the aged women who have higher ability of chewing and then are satisfied with their taking food reported more healthiness, were assessed healthier in vital capacity and blood pressure, and less complained feeling anxious. It is important for the quality of life (QOL) of the aged that the purpose of "the campaign 8020" should be realized through the continuous efforts. It is also important, even if the aged have few or almost no their own teeth, that the amenity of dental and oral circumstances should be maintaintd as well as possible, from the point of mental and physical health of them.
