Coil embolization of ruptured cerebral aneurysms, carotid artery stenting, and mechanical thrombectomy in cases of acute ischemic stroke are the most frequently performed endovascular interventions in stroke. In the present review, we will discuss these neuroendovascular procedures, along with the latest results of the related large-scale clinical trials.
For coil embolization, we will show how novel coil types and adjuvant devices have contributed to expanding the surgical indication for coiling and how they have improved the clinical outcome. For carotid artery stenting, we will present the devices used to prevent ischemic complications, along with some of the current issues and future challenges. Finally, we will review the mechanical thrombectomy, a more recent treatment method for acute cerebral artery occlusion, and thrombectomy devices such as Merci Retriever and Penumbra System.
