Sophomores observed actual classes given by three experienced art teachers at elementary and junior high schools, and improved their understanding of how best to create course units and run a class. We believe this research indicates that through observing experienced teachers’ classes, the university students’ understanding of classes was enhanced in terms of the following. 1. The sophomores were made aware of the importance of careful examination and screening of class content, methods, the educational environment, subjects and other items that form the perspectives required to understand classes. This was achieved by mutual evaluation among the students using keywords identified from perspective, strategy, values and attitudes that are inherent in superior subjects and classes. 2. The students came to understand that experienced teachers establish a concept and/or theme in their classes, based on which they meticulously build and refine their teaching process.
