In this paper a new genus, Protapatura, is founded to receive the new species which is described by Mr. S. IGARASHI in the next paper. This new genus is remarkable not only in its systematic position but in its geographical distribution and habitat. The new genus superficially very much resembles the genus Apatura and its allies, but the structures of the male genitalia show some peculiar features, of which the basal structure of the saccus seems to be the most primitive in the Apaturinae, while the phallic and uncal structures are undoubtedly the results of unique specializations. The Apaturinae is one of the nymphalid groups of which the main habitats are in the Sino-Malayan region under the humid temperate and subtropical climates. The new genus is distributed in the Northern Iraq and it seems to be a relic genus of the primitive apaturines surviving in the border of the distributional range of the subfamily under the arid climate. The systematic postion of the new genus in the Apaturinae besides its geographical distribution is similar to that of the Archon in the Papilionidae. Before going further we would like to express our cordial thanks to Mr. SUGURU IGARASHI, who have first found the type-species under difficult condition, for his kindness allowing us to study on this unique type-species.

In this paper I describe a remarkable new species of the Nymphalidae, of which the first specimen was collected at Amadiya in the Northern Iraq during my collecting trip from June to July of 1970, and further two males and three females were collected at the same locality in summer of 1971. In this opportunity I wish to express deepest appreciation to the late Mr. TARO IWASE for his kind guidance during his lifetime, and also express regret over his death during my stay in Iraq. The specific name of this new species is dedicated to him. Particular thanks are due to Mr. T. G. HOWARTH, British Museum (Natural History), Professor T. SHIROZU, Kyushu University, and to Dr. Y. KUROSAWA, National Science Museum, Tokyo for their kind advices. My thanks are also due to Associate Professor T. SAIGUSA, Kyushu University for his kind suggestion on the male genitalia of the new species and to Mr. MATHEUS TOMA who cooperated with me during the collecting trip.

The Chrysozephyrus group occuring in the northern as well as middle mountainous areas of Formosa, includes some extremely similar species each other in appearance, especially C. mushaellus and esakii are so full of individual variety in their colour, marking, size, etc, that we have been studying on the limits of their variety and the confusion of some extremely resembling species. In consequence of our study, we have already published two new species, Chrysozephyrus yuchingkinus, in TYO TO GA, Vol. 11, No. 2, 1960, and Chrysozephyrus hsuehshanus, in Tohoku Konchu Kenkyu, Vol. 4, No. 2, p. 22-23, pl. 3, 1969, and further, in this time, two new Chrysozephyrus species are added to our science. We are greatly indebted to Mr. C. K. Yu at Puli in Formosa, who has placed many contributing Chrysozephyrus materials at our disposal. Most grateful thanks are also due to Mr. James R. Neidhoefer at Milwaukee in U.S.A. and Mr. S. K. Ong at Peitou in Formosa for their supreme support of our preparation for manuscript.

1. The number and relative size of chromoromes are described in 9 species of butterflies from Malaysia. Among them 6 species are new to cytology : Troides (Trogonoptera) brookianus albescens, Troides (Troides) helena cerberus, Troides (Troides) amphrysus flavicollis, Delias hyparete diva, Dichorragia nesimachus deiokes and Euploea (Adigama) redtenbacheri redtenbacheri. 2. Chromosomal dimorphism was observed in Elymnias hypermnestra nigrescens and Delias hyparete diva. There exist some relation between geographical isolation and chromosomal variation.

Mating behavior of Peacock Pansy, Precis almana was observed. The results of observations are as follows: 1. Encounter of the female and the male, 2. Pursuiting, 3. Response of the female for the pursuiting male (flying and alighting), 4. Courtship (pattern of courtship and sense of smell), 5. Copulation, 6. Separation. Concerning the courtship in stage 4 there are some different patterns. Also it was confirmed that a female which has finished copulation behaves itself to refuse copulation against further pursuiting and courtship of a male.

Observation was made on the ovipositing habit and larval food plants of Polygonia c-aureum LINNE which was bred in the wire-netted cage shown in Fig. 1. In every generation eggs were laid not only on the food plant, Humulus japonicus SIEB. et Zucc., but on some other plants, wire gauze, bamboo poles and concrete blocks. Especially a considerable number of eggs were laid on concrete blocks (Tab. 2, Tab. 3). The larvae ate even Boehmeria spicata THUNB., Urtica Thunbergiana SIEB. et Zucc. and Celtis sinensis PERS. var japonica (PLANCH.) NAKAI, but most of them died in their early larval stage. Some of them grew into pupal stage, but never emerged. As being observed in the field, this species sometimes lays eggs in piles in the cage. But this ovipositing habit seems to be an exceptional case in this species.
