In butterflies, male wings are said to be more conspicuous or occasionally more brilliant than those of females (Darwin, 1874). However, the males of Narathura bazalus distributed from the Himalayas to Japan appear to have mostly black wings, whereas females possess a conspicuous blue mark on the forewing. This species, along with two related species N. japonica and Panchala ganesa, was examined for possible reflection of UV light. Specimens were photographed in UV light and also analyzed by spectrophotometry. N. bazalus males clearly reflected UV light from the whole dorsal surface of the fore- and hindwings, and sexual difference in dorsal colors was large in N. bazalus and small in N. japonica with no difference in P. ganesa.

Tayalopsyche gen. nov. of Psychidae is described from the mountain region of Taiwan based on Tayalopsyche spinidomifera sp. nov. The genus somewhat resembles Bacotia, but is more plesiomorphic than it in having the cellula intrusa in the forewing, well-developed uncal lobes and an invaginated pouch on the diaphragma of the male genitalia. The larval case of the new species is unique in being ornamented with elongate plant fragments erected on its outer surface.

The generic position of Smerinthus decoratus Moore, 1872 is discussed. Most recently, the species has been included in Marumba Moore, a position that is no longer tenable in the light of new material and further investigation of its adult morphology. A new genus, Morwennius, is therefore erected for S. decoratus.

The meiotic chromosomes of seven charaxine species belonging to the genera Archaeoprepona, Prepona and Agrias from Brazil and Peru were investigated with primary and secondary spermatocytes. The haploid numbers of chromosomes were found to be n=16 for Archaeoprepona demophon and Ar. demophoon, n=15 for Ar. licomedes, n=9 for Ar. amphimachus and Ar. meander, n=12 for Prepona pheridamas and Agrias claudina All these Neotropical butterflies contained one to ten large-sized chromosomes in their metaphase plates. In view of the correlation between choromosome size and modal number of chromosomes (n=31) in Nymphalidae, the large-sized chromosomes noticed here might have been formed through chromosome fusion, which resulted in decrease of chromosome number.
