JOURNAL FREE ACCESSInteraction of laser-produced target plasma with ambient gas is experimentally investigated. A plane target is irradiated by a focused or unfocused ruby laser beam. An increase of the plasma density observed at medium pressure of the order of 10-2 torr is ascribed to a reduction of plasma volume by the existence of surrounding gas. Further increase of the pressure results in a decrease of the plasma density, which is explained by scattering of the plasma particles. Also, the observed retardation of the target plasma may be caused by a friction with the ambient gas.View full abstractDownload PDF (555K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe Kerr effect in special grade test chemical nitrobenzene of 99 percent purity was measured by laser and depolarization was observed. Laser light dispersion was also observed and the correlation between these two phenomena was studied.A qualitative study was made on the basis of P. Debye's fluctuation theory, the ion movement in the nitrobenzene. The ion mobility was estimated to be 1.8 × 10-4-2.7 × 10-4 cm2/V. S. for negative ions and 1.3 × 10-4-2.1 ×10-4 cm2 / V. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSIn a transversely excited (TE) electric discharge laser (CO EDL) with subsonic flow, fundamental laser characteristics have been theoretically examined by numerically solving the Boltzmann equation and rate equations. The effects of a gas flow are also taken into account in this model. The conditions for the calculations are based on the experimental data which were obtained at the small-scale laser facility. These calculations revealed the important role of the abundant N2 in a laser mixture (CO/N2/He=4/32/64) which had been optimized in our experiment.View full abstractDownload PDF (1162K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSFabrication of capacitive-Al-mesh output coupler for the optically pumped FIR laser is studied. With use of metal mesh sheet for a deposition mask, aluminium is directly deposited on the substrate of which materials are either crystal quartz, silicon, or germanium.To construct well-defined capacitive mesh structures, thedeposition mask is designed so as to realize complete contact with the substrate. Output characteristics of the coupler are examined with an optically pumped 251 μm CH3OH laser as follows: (1) FIR output powers of 34 m Wat 163 μm, 18 m Wat 251 μm, and 8 m Wat 469 μm, are extracted from a 25W pump (2) the coupler is capable ofenhancing a particular oscillation line by adjusting mesh parameters; (3) oscillation modes in the cavity tuning curve are clear enough to assign their wavelengths easiliy.View full abstractDownload PDF (1242K) -
