  • Manipulation of Quantum Fluctuations

    The origin of quantum noise is addressed and it can be eliminated when the quantum state is optimally prepared for the single measured observable. Minimum uncertainty states are reviewed using Q (α) -representation, which include squeezed states and number-phase minimum uncertainty states. Squeezing is a concept of trading quantum uncertainties between two conjugate observables to optimize the state for the measurement. Need for optical nonlinearity to achieve squeezing is induced. Principles and experimental results for squeezing quadrature amplitude and photon number are delineated. Applications to optical communications and optical precision measurement are briefly stated.

    An ion-trap technique and laser cooling of trapped ions are utilized for ultra-high resolution spectroscopy. Following an overview of the ion-trap technique and the laser cooling of ions confined in an ion trap, some examples of experiments are given. Application of the laser cooling of trapped ions to basic studies and frequency standards is described.

    Conventional techniques for obtaining both spectroscopic and pictorial information of incoherent objects are first reviewed and then the principle and implementations of a new method called Fourier transform spectral imaging [K. Itoh and Y. Ohtsuka, J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 3 (1986) 94.] are illustrated by referring to experimental results obtained recently. The critical considerations resulted in classification of the conventional techniques into nine categories, the new method being included in one of the most advanced algorithms. The principle is illustrated from the view point of the power spectrum estimation of a homogeneous random field rather than that of propagation of the spatial coherence.

    When governing equations of a one-dimensional mixing theory are solved in the two limited cases, vibrational-frozen and vibrational-equilibrium flows, actual flow parameters such as static temperature and velocity at a optical cavity region in mixing gasdynamic lasers can be determined from measured static pressure at the cavity point. A measured static temperature at the laser excitation region determined by the present method is 268°K with the theoretical uncertainty of ±1.9%. This value of the temperature is well agreed with a temperature estimated by a rotational population distribution of carbon dioxide molecules. It is revealed from a theoretical consideration that the uncertainty of the flow parameters determinedthis method is less thin ±10% even at a high stagnation temperature (-3000°K) and any higher Mach number at the cavity section.

    The N2 laser microbeam is irradiated on the nuclei of the callus cell of Tabacco leaf by varying the power density of the laser light in the range from 2.8×1012 to 2.7×1013 W/m2. It is found that the does action curve clearly depends on the peak power, indicating that two photon absorption process plays an important role in the leathal effect. The details of the design and the construction of the N2 laser microbeam system are also presented.

    The output and discharge characteristics of an x-ray preionized Xe Cl laser with a pulse forming line (PFL), a rail-gap switch (RGS) and a pulse transmission line (PTL) in the excitation circuit are described in detail. It is found that the relatively large inductance of the RGS leads to the efficient energy deposition into the discharge plasmas when the RGS is placed between the PFL and the PTL. The laser system with a low output impedance of 0.26Ω has produced the maximum laser energy of 50 J in an 85-ns pulse (FWHM). The highest electrical efficiency obtained is 3.1%. The discharge stability is also discussed, based on the measurements of laser pulse-shape, laser energy and voltage on the laser electrode.
