    The mode partition noise of semiconductor laser diodes in high-speed PCM direct modulation systems is reviewed from the standpoint of communication applications. First, the progress in this field is summarized briefly, and an appropriate noise model to predict the transmission performance is explained. Second, the parameters to evaluate the mode partition noisein optical communication systems are explained. Third, methods to measure the noise parameters are de scribed.

    We have fabricated the InGaAsP/InP DBR-lasers with the wavelength range of 1.5μm, and investigated their optoelectronic properties. High sub-mode suppression ratios of exceeding 35 dB, and very narrow spectral linewidths less than 10 MHz were obtained. Wavelengthtuning was performed by an injection of tuning current in Bragg reflector region. The maximum continuous tuning range was 1.9 nm. In addition, the effects of anti-reflection (AR) coating on the lasing characteristics were investigated. The experimental results show that the AR-coating can improve the sub-mode suppression ratio by about 5 dB. The output power of the lasers with AR-coating are about 1.5 times larger than that of the lasers without AR-coating. These results agree well with theoretical calculations.

    An integrated-optic RF spectrum analyzer (IOSA) using a focusing grating coupler (FGC) is proposed and demonstrated. The use of the FGC as a Fourier transform element allows photodetector coupling with a spot size to pixel size matching and relaxes fabrication accuracy requirements; thus the IOSA has potential advantages of a high resolution, wide bandwidthand high dynamic range. The design consideration of the FGC shows that an IOSA of a 1.5 MHz resolution and 1-GHz bandwidth is feasible. A fully-integrated IOSA was fabricated by integrating an acoustooptic Bragg cell, a FGC and a proton-exchanged Fresnel lens in a Ti: LiNbO3waveguide, followed by coupling a laser diode and a CCD linear image sensor. The IOSA operation of a 6-MHz resolution was experimentally obtained.

    A novel phase-locked laser diode, a SAWTOOTH channeled array, is described. In order to obtain a uniform and flat active layer by liquid phase epitaxy, channels are formed all over the substrate in the array. The uniformity and flatness of the active layer produce a stable narrow beam and a reliable high output power operation. A nearly diffraction-limited (1.2°) two-lobed far field pattern at a high output power (200mW) is obtained from the 10-stripe (50 μm aperture) array with a double-heterostructure (DH). A low threshold current of 210mA and a high output power up to 1.3W cw are achieved in the 20-stripe (100 μm aperture) array with a separateconfinement heterostructure (SCH). The extrapolated lifetimes in 200mW cw operation at 50° Cexceed 30, 000hrs.

    Q-switched CO2 laser has been investigated, in which the total reflection mirror of the laser resonator was attached to the ultrasonic vibrator and was vibrated along the axis of the resonator. In this method, there is a problem that multiple pulses may occur in a period of vibration. It is possible to decrease the number of pulses in a period by reducing the displacement of the vibrating mirror. But in the vicinity of the resonant frequency of the ultrasonic vibrator (-17 kHz), with smaller displacement the peak pulse power decreases and its pulse width becomes wider. There exist higher frequency bands (40-80 kHz) in which weak vibration of the ultrasonic vibrator occurs. In these frequency bands, single pulse with higher peak power and narrower width compared with the pulse appeared in low frequency band was obtained.

    In order to increase the brightness and coherence of a tunable UV excimer laser, we studied an oscillator-amplifier configuration by using one laser discharge tube. Line-narrowing to 0.12 pm is achieved by using a grating and two etalons in the oscillator. The output energy and the brightness can be enhanced greatly by injecting an oscillation beam into the unused volume of the discharge tube.

    The thermal properties of internal-mirror He-Ne (λ = 633 nm) laser tubes are reported. Inside and outside temperatures of the laser tube are measured with a PbS photodetector and thermo-couples, and also the thermal expansion properties of the laser tube are measured. The outside temperature at the fore part of the laser tube is higher than that at other parts of the laser tube. The heat that generated inside the fore part of the laser capillary tube is conducted in the radial direction and mainly elevates the temperature of other parts of the laser tube by heat conduction. The high temperature at the fore part would affect the laser thermal stability. The optimum laser tube structures are discussed.
