The present paper reviews the recent work on developing new nonlinear optical crystal LiB
3O
5. On the bassis of the anionic group theory of the nonlinear optical effect, boron-oxygen groups of various structure types in borate crystals were classified and the microscopic second-order susceptibilities of the basic anionic groups were calculated. From the calculated results the following structural guideline was proposed: the B
3O
7 group is an ideal basic structural unit for new UV nonlinear optical crystals. The LiB
3O
5 crystal, with the B
3O
7 group as the basic structural unit, was recognized as an excellent UV nonlinear optical material after phase relationship studies, crystal growth, and measurements of various physical properties.
