The output characteristics of a cw. HCN laser are investigated, and the optimum total flow of gases, total pressure and gas mixture ratio for each discharge current are discussed in detail. For developing a compact cw HCN laser, both the dependence of output power on the lengthLof an active medium and the enhancing effect of anauxiliary dc discharge on the output power are experimentally studied by introducing movable anodes in both laser and auxiliary tubes. It is found that the output power increases linearly with the lengthLup to 60cm in our laser and suffers a remarkable nonlinearity after that. These results are used successfully to obtain an unsaturated gain of our laser, and it is estimated to be about 0.24/m at the discharge current of 0.45 A.

The two-dimensional distribution of self-generated magnetic fields near the laser-plasma interaction region is observed for the first time by a very simple method of laser irradiation of audio magnetic tape. The lobe structure is a maximum at the incident angle of 10 to 15 degrees for p-polarized laser beam. The direction of the fields is perpendicular to the density gradient and to the incident p-polarization plane. Parity existence is verified by using convergent and divergent laser beams in a large cone angle case. In a small cone angle experiment, negative and positive magnetic fields across the resonance region, and the parity existence by reversing the sign of the incident angle are proved. These observations strogly support the resonance absorption as the field generation mechanism.

Output performance of x-ray preionized KrF laser is reported. Flash x-raygenerator used in this work produced 1.5×10⁸electrons/cm³in laser gas. Outputenergy of 140 mJ obtained with x-ray preionization, indicating an electrical efficiencyof 0.93% is greater than 70 mJ obtained with wire corona preionization. KrF laseremission was detected from the initial electron density of about 10⁶/cm³and the laserenergy was found to increase with increasing the initial electron number density.
