This special issue is dedicated to the resilience of tourism. In addition to the COVID-19 pandemic, Japan has been hit by numerous earthquakes and natural disasters. Tourism is characterized by its vulnerability and susceptibility to these disasters. In response to these crises, the tourism industry has taken various steps to restore demand. It is important for the sustainability of the industry to consider the measures taken before, during and after the crisis, in response to external factors beyond its control. The five papers in this issue discuss resilience from different perspectives, including recovery of business sales, community systems, and natural resources. The accumulation of such interdisciplinary knowledge will help with preparation for the next crisis.
