JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe ion molecule reactions have been studied with the instrument which consisted of two mass spectrometers. Samples were used He+, Xe+, N2+, CO+ and C2H4+ as the primary ions(bombarding ions), and n-butane as the secondary sample. In this instrument the path of the primary ions met at right angles with the path of the secon dary, and that the secondary ions were seperated with the double focussing mass spectrometer, then the ions produced through the recombination of the primary ions and n-butane were scarecely observed. In the case of inert gas ion(He+, Ar+, Xe+)bombardment, the mass spectra of n-butane showed some characteristic feature, or, the intensity of molecular ions and the number of fragment ion peaks were decreased in inverse proportion to the mass number and momentum of the primary ions. And in the case of same mass number ion(N2+, Co+, C2H4+)bombardment, the mass spectra of n-butane were not affected by the mass number of the primary ions, but they were affected by the chemical characteristics and the size of the primary ions more dominant.View full abstractDownload PDF (677K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSSome fragment ions from pentane isomers resulting from electron impact possess considerable kinetic energies. On the basis of the information gained about the effect of discrimination on ions, the amount of the kinetic energies of fragment ions from n-pentane, iso-pentane and neo-pentane has been determined. The results of experiments show, in general, that the kinetic energies of these fragment ions increase with a decrease in the number of hydrogen atoms, that is, as the number of scissions of the C-H bond increases. However, somexceptions were observed. The C2H4+ ions from n-, iso-and neo-pentanes possess high kinetic energies(about 0.55 eV); theC3H6+ and C3H4+ ions from neo-pentane possess higher kinetic energies(about 0.45 eV)than those from n-and isopentanes; and the C4H6+ ions from n-and iso-pentanes possess higher ones(about 0.4 eV)than that from neo-pentane. Comparing the chemical structure of these isomers and appearance potentials of the ions, the dissociation processes for the fragment ions with high kinetic energies were discussed. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSSpark source mass spectroscopy is applied to determine impurities in a drop of liquid sample. The water drop evaporation technique and electroplating technique are investigated combined with internal standard technique. Some methods of calibration has been examined. is shown that in many cases the impurities in a liquid sample may be determined with relative deviation of ±10% provided the internal standard is used. The impurity enrichment on surface has been revealed to occur in electroplating, which results the higher sensitivity compared with water drop evaporation technique. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe pressed electrode techniques using graphite perwder as a conducting suppdit material have been investigated to obtain favorable source conditions for quantitative analysis of powder samples by spark source mass spectrographic method. 1. Using the pressing tool which we have developed, a rod sufficiently strong to be clamped in the electrode holders could be formed from mixtures of graphite and sample in any ratio, so far as we tested with KCl, CdS, ZnCl2and GaAs. 2. The relative sensitivity, for example, of K to Cl in the graphite-KCl pressed electrodes was found strongly dependent on the spark gap width. However, comparatively reproducible sensitivity(relative standard deviation less than10per cent)could be obtained, provided that the spark gap could be easily kept at about100μ, with rf spark voltage at 40-60 KV, repetition rate at 100-300 per second and the graphite content larger than ca50per cent by weight. 3.
