    The deuteron beam was applied as a primary ion to the ion microprobe mass spectrometry. The beam focus and the detection sensitivities of secondary ions for elements were examined, regarding 21 keV D3+ ion beam. The results were compared with those of similar experiments by 20 keV O2+.
    The current density was very high, and beam focus was extremely good; in the current density range from 0.1 to 0.5 A/cm2 the D-ion beam could be focussed to 0.5 μm. The secondary ion sensitivities under D3+ bombardment were low. But, for noble metals such as Au and Ag the sensitivities were comparably high. Making use of the merit of its high current density, it can be promising to use the deuteron beam as a primary ion for the ion microprobe mass spectrometry. Moreover, very low sputtering yield and good focus could enable us to do the three dimensional analysis with high precision.
    The problems in the use of deuteron beam as a primary ion are formation of blistering or flaking and of rough surface under the deuteron bombardment. The surface swelling and the surface compositional change as well, for Si and for compounds such as TiC respectively, should be considered.

    A quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS) with an energy analyzed electron source has been available for measurement of ionization efficiency curves (IE curves) by electron impact. Whole of the measurements were controlled by a computer system. The energy spread of an electron beam used was less than 60 meV full width at half maximum (FWHM). The ionization energies of furan, benzene, pyridine, and cyclohexane were determined by means of the square root fitting method of the ionization efficiency curves. The energy scale was calibrated by measuring the threshold value for argone ion which is known as 15.759 eV.

    A method for the estimation of standard heats of formation ΔHf of some organic, even-electron cations is proposed. The estimation procedure is essentially the same with the one previously reported (Bowen-Williams method), except for substituting a hydrogen atom, instead of a methyl group, of the standard alkyl ion to other functional groups such as OH or NH2. The present method has wider applicability than the Bowen-Williams method, because it can also give ΔHf of higher homologous alkyl ion itself, which, in turn, can be used as a standard value for larger organic ions.

    The mass spectral fragmentation of the cyclodipeptides were investigated. The main fragmentation processes for the peptides were almost the same. In the case of compounds that have the large side chains, the cyclic skeletal ions generated by the loss of the side chain group were followed by the further fragmentations. The important ions arising from cycloglycylglycine in 70 eV-mass spectrum were of m/z 86 [M-CO] and of m/z 71 [M-NHCO] from which further fragmentations occurred. The metastable ion spectrum by B/E linked scan method indicated that the m/z 30 (the most abundant ion in 70 eV-mass spectrum) was formed from the process via the ion of m/z 86.
