A miniature mass spectrograph was newly designed and constructed as a prototype model for future lunar or planetary explorations. The ion optical system was newly designed based on Mattauch-Herzog geometry. The mass spectrograph employs a focal plane detector consisting of a microchannel plate (MCP), a phosphor layer, a fiber-optic plate (FOP) and a charge-coupled device (CCD). The 2D and 1D spectra of the residual gases, krypton and neon were observed in preliminary experiments. The mass resolution of 130 was achieved experimentally, and this was in good agreement with the simulation based on the transfer matrix method. The experimental value of the detectable m/z range was also consistent with the calculated version. Moreover, stable isotopes of Kr and Ne were observed without saturation of the detector. A dynamic range of 300 was achieved.

A new spiral time-of-flight mass spectrometer orthogonally coupled with an ESI ion source was designed and constructed. The spiral ion optical system consisted of four toroidal electrostatic sectors. Each had fifteen stories made by sixteen Matsuda plates piled up inside a cylindrical electrostatic sector. The ions passed the four toroidal electrostatic sectors sequentially and revolved along a figure-eight-shaped orbit on a certain projection plane. During multiple revolutions, the ion trajectory shifted by 50 mm perpendicular to the projection plane every cycle, thus generating a spiral trajectory. The flight path length of one cycle was 1.3 m so that the maximum flight path length was 20 m when ion turned 15 cycles. The basic performance was tested by using several high molecular weight compounds. A mass resolution was achieved to be more than 55,000 (full width at half maximum) at m/z=3,000. The mass accuracy was remarkably improved to be better than 0.5 ppm in high mass region of up to m/z=3,000. An ion transmission of approximately 100% was observed up to 15 cycles.

In this study, the on-line high-throughput detection technique of a reaction product of a micro-chemical synthesis using microchips was developed by means of an electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESIMS) with on-chip purification (extraction) of reaction mixture to reduce any ionization hindrance. This technique is useful for on-line high-throughput qualitative analysis of chemical synthesis products. This technique was applied to monitor the on-chip N-trifluoroacetylation of 2-phenetylamine. The remaining 2-phenetylamine and trifluoroacetic acid that acted as an ionization hindrance were extracted from the ether solution of the reaction mixture to the phosphate buffer solution using an extraction microchip connected to the micro-synthesis chip. By decreasing the remaining 2-phenetylamine and trifluoroacetic acid, the spectrum of 2,2,2-trifluoro-N-phenetyl acetamide in the reaction mixture was clearly observed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometer.
