    Kidneys play an important role in homeostatic control, and the functions are decline with age. This decline in renal function is correlated with the decrease in the functional renal mass.
    Tubular brush border membranes are changed during aging. Enzyme activities in the brush border membranes are decreased with age. Age-related alterations of the enzymes are different from enzyme to enzyme. Transport of phosphate and of Na+-H+ exchange is decreased with age, but not glucose and amino acid. Thus, brush border membrane components show a different alteration process during aging.

    Studies on the permeation of substances through membranes of substituted polyacetylenes, especially poly [1- (trimethylsilyl) -1-propyne] [poly (TMSP)] are reviewed : Poly (TMSP) exhibits extremely high gas permeability among all the existing polymers, which is due to both of the solubility and diffusivity of gases being large. The solubility and diffusivity in other substituted polyacetylenes are also discussed. For the decrease of the permeability of poly (TMSP) with time, several mechanisms such as structural reluxation, adsorption, and oxidation have been suggested. Since the separation factor, PO2/PN2, of the polymer is rather small, some methods of increasing it have been attempted. Poly (TMSP) shows high apparent permeability also to oxygen dissolved in water. Although a large resistance of boundary layer exists in the permeation, the permeability at infinite membrane thickness agrees with that for gaseous oxygen. Like poly (dimethylsiloxane), poly (TMSP) permeates ethanol preferentially in the ethanol-water pervaporation.     Principle of laser oscillation and a variety of laser application were interpreted, and recent advances in laser chemistry were described. For organic thin films, time-resolved total internal reflection fluorescence spectroscopy is very fruitful, since it provides novel information on relaxation dynamics of electronic excitation energy, photochemical reaction, dopant concentration, and so on near the surface. Using fluorescence microscope this methodology was developed to be a dynamic fluorescence microprobe. Intense pulsed laser excitation of organic films loads to an efficient ablation. Molecular and electronic aspect of this phenomenon were studied by examining polymer films doped with π-electronic molecules whose photophysical and photochemical properties are well know.

    Changes in some biochemical and physicochemical properties of lipid membranes extracted from rat liver mitochondria during the formation process of megamitochondria induced by hydrazine were analyzed. Hepatic mitochondria obtained from rats placed on a 1% hydrazine diet for 3 days became slightly enlarged while they became gigantic after 7 days of hydrazine intoxication. Changes were distinct in mitochondria of rats treated with hydrazine for 3 days : 1) Among phospholipid species, relative amounts of phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylserine (PS) and lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) were increased. A ratio of cholesterol to phospholipid and that of unsaturated to saturated fatty acids were increased. 2) Contents of Ca2+ in mitochondria were increased. 3) Differential scanning calorimetric analysis of lipid membranes extracted from mitochondria showed that the thermotropic lipid phase transition temperatures were elevated. The values of enthalpy were increased and were smaller in the presence of Ca2+ than those in the absence of Ca2+. 4) The fluidity of those membranes was increased by the addition of Ca2+.
    These changes had a tendency to return to nomal after 7 days of hydrazine treatment. The result described in #3 was reproduced using PS-PC mixture.
    From the above described data the bilayer structure in the mitochondrial membranes during the process of megamitochondrial formation might possibly be destabilized by PS-Ca2+ and PE-cholesterol interactions. These results would suggest that the membrane fusion might be involved in the megamitochondrial formation.

    The process of copper permeation through hollow fiber type liquid membrane impregnated with β-hydroxybenzophemone oxime (LIX65N) has been studied. Porous support hollow fibers were made of two materials, such as polyacrylonitrile and polypropylene. LIX65N was diluted in kerosene by 10vol%. Concentration of copper and pH in feed solution are in the range of 10-2-88mol/m3 and 7.94×10-4-1.58×10-2mol/m3 respectively.
    Rate determining step in the copper permeation is found interfacial reaction between copper in the feed solution and free LIX65N in the liquid membrane of which concentration is expressed [HR]. The flux maximum of Cu2+ through membrane which is observed at the initial stage of permeation experiment 15-24 hours is proportional to the 2nd order of [HR] when the range of [HR] is 8×10-3-1mol/m3 and the range of copper concentrations is 10-2-88mol/m3. The order of reaction and reaction rate constant do not depend on material of porous support hollow fiber membrane. This phenomenon is different from that observed after 5days with membrane with 20vol% of LIX65N.

    The permeation experiments of Cu2+ were carried out through liquid membranes supported on four kinds of porous hollow fibers, which contained LIX-65N of concentration ; 0.047-0.094, 1.6, 15-16 [mol/m3] as mobile carrier and kerosine and O-xylene of volumeric composition ratio ; 100/0, 75/25, 25/75, 0/100 [vol%/vol%] as diluent. The hydrophobic membranes were better for supporter than the hydrophilic. The richer the O-xylene was contained as diluent, the more remarkably the destruction of membranes occurred. By means of saturating both feed and recovery solutions with liquid membrane solution, the flux of Cu2+ through membrane was stabilized more than 50 days. It was found that the interfacial reaction between Cu2+ and LIX-65N on the membrane facing feed solution was rate determining step. The flux of Cu2+ through membrane was proportional to the first power of [HR] f, (concentration of mobile carrier in membrane on feed solution side), in region of [HR] f, greater than 0.1 [mol/m3] and the second power of [HR] f, less than 0.1 [mol/m3].
