Detection and serotyping of Orientia tsutsugamushi from individual unfed larval trombiculid mites, whose cuticles remained, were performed by the immunofluorescent technique in three areas including an endemic area of Tsutsugamushi disease in Kagoshima Prefecture. A total of 9,540 unfed larvae of Leptotrombidium scutellare and 31 of Helenicula miyagawai were collected by the black cloth method over 120 minutes. Of the above two species, 6,775 out of 9,571 unfed larvae were examined for O. tsutsugamushi by the immunofluorescent technique. One unfed larva L. scutellare collected from the endemic area tested positive for O. tsutsugamushi and the serotype was determined as Kawasaki type O. tsutsugamushi by the immunofluorescent technique using the serotype specific monoclonal antibody. The natural infection rate of the ethiologic agent O. tsutsugamushi to the larvae L. scutellare in one endemic area was estimated to be less than 0.05%. Moreover, a total of 71 unfed larvae consisting of four species, L. scutellare, L. fuji, L. kitasatoi and Cheladonta ikaoensis, and three adults were recovered from five soil samples from the above endemic area. Here, all mites from soil samples tested negative for O. tsutsugamushi.

The number of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157: H7 (EHEC O157) in the female housefly feces excreted on foods such as raw beef and boiled potato was counted after contact with flies 3, 24 and 48 hr after 10^6 and 10^9 colony-forming units (CFU)/ml EHEC ingestion. In the experiment of ingestion of 10^6 CFU/ml, a small number of EHEC was detected in all harvested samples just after feeding contact. EHEC O157 of 10^2-10^8 CFU were detected from the harvested food around eosin-stained excreta, when the foods were preserved overnight at 29℃ after feeding contact. EHEC O157 of 10^2-10^5 CFU were counted from the harvested food with excreta of 10^9 CFU/ml ingested flies just after food contact. The EHEC O157 in the excreta on the foods drastically proliferated ranging 10^2-10^5-fold (10^2-10^4 and 10^3-10^8 CFU) overnight at 29℃. These results suggested that the small number of EHEC O157 excreted on the foods by EHEC O157-contaminated houseflies is a possible source of food poisoning under inadequate preservation. Complete sanitary arrangements with fly-proof structure in the cooking facilities and by food manufacturers is strongly recommended.

This paper reports cutaneous myiasis on a skin cancer of a 90-year-old patient living in a nursing home for the aged in Tochigi city, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. On 21 April 2001, the nurse in charge of the patient noticed oozing from a cancer lesion on the cheek of the patient. When she removed the gauze covering the lesion, she found wriggling, milky white maggots in the lesion. Thirty-four larvae were collected from the lesion. Author S. S. identified the emerged adult flies as Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Japanese name: Hirozu-kinbae). In traditional medical practice, the larvae of some calliphorid flies, notably L. illustris, L. sericata, and Phormia regina, have been used to clean lesions antiseptically (maggot therapy), especially in the treatment of chronic osteomyelitis. This mode of treatment remains appropriate for cases where antibiotics are ineffective and surgery is impracticable. Similar treatment happened unintentionally in this case. The decrease in the size, cleanness of the skin cancer and elimination of odor in the present case may be due to some beneficial effects of this maggot therapy.

The fauna and distribution of blackflies in Okayama Prefecture, Japan, were examined based on the collections of larvae and pupae from streams and adults flying around the collectors at 74 sites in spring of 1991. A total of 4,949 blackflies, [3,675 larvae (74.3% in total number), 1,259 pupae (25.4%) and 15 adults (0.3%)], were collected at 72 sites. These blackflies were classified into 23 species of three genera : Prosimulium Roubaud, Cnephia Enderlein and Simulium Latreille. Nine species, i.e. Prosimulium (Prosimulium) kiotoense, P (P.) yezoense, Cnephia (Stegopterna) mutata, Simulium (Nevermannia) aureohirtum, S. (N) konoi, S. (N.) mie, S. (Gomphostilbia) ogatai, S. (Simulium) japonicum and S. (S.) kawamurae were newly recorded from Okayama Prefecture. Further, five undescribed and / or unidentified spcies, e.g. E. sp. 2, S. sp. H, S. sp. O-1, S. sp. O-2 and S. (Helichiella) sp., were recognized. The most abundant species was S. (N) uchidai (22.9% in total number), followed by S. (S.) arakawae (19.7%), S. (S.) japonicum (18.8%), P. (P.) kiotoense (10.9%), S. (N) subcostatum (8.1%), S. (S.) suzukii (3.6%) and S. (Gnus) bidentatum (3.3%). The most widely distributed species was S. (N) uchidai (55 sites), followed by S. (S.) japonicum (44 sites), S. (N) subcostatum (32 sites), S. (S.) arakawae (26 sites), S. (Gn.) bidentatum (26 sites), S. (S.) rufibasis (22 sites), S. (O.) aokii (17 sites) and P. (P.) kiotoense (14 sites).
