A faunistic survey of the family Simuliidae in Flores and Timor, Indonesia, yielded a total of nine species comprising four new, four named, and one unidentified species. All belong to the genus Simulium Latreille s. 1. and four subgenera, Gomphostilbia Enderlein (4 spp.), Nevermannia Enderlein (1 sp.), Simulium Latreille s. str. (3 spp.) and Wallacellum (1 sp.). Descriptions for all new species are given.

A new black-fly species, Simulium (Simulium) ranauense sp. nov., is described based on the reared adults, pupae and mature larvae collected from Sumatra, Indonesia. This new species is assigned to the eximium species-group, and is very similar in the female and larva to S. (S.) eximium De Meijere described from Java, but is distinguished from the latter species in the male by the presence of the paired silvery iridescent dorsolateral spots on the fourth abdominal segment in addition to those on the second, fifth, sixth and seventh segments, and in the pupa by the boot-shaped cocoon with a high front wall.

Simulium (Boreosimulium) tokachiense sp. nov. is described on the basis of adults, pupae and mature larvae collected in Tokachi, Hokkaido, Japan. This is the second species of the subgenus Boreosimulium from Japan, and is most similar to S. (B.) balteatum described from North America by having the paramere with one medial and three apical hooks, the style with the dorsomesal margin bulged, and the pupal gill with the dorsal stalk branching near the middle of the gill. However, this new species is distinguished in the pupa by the gill with the ventral stalk very short and in the larva by the antenna without hyaline bands and the abdomen with a weakly colored transverse band on each segment.

Two species of deer keds, Lipoptena fortisetosa Maa and L. sikae Mogi, were collected from Miyajima, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. This is the first report of L. fortisetosa from Hiroshima Prefecture and for L. sikae from the Chugoku district. Alate individuals of L. fortisetosa were collected during June-October by sweeping; L. sikae were similarly collected in November. Both sexes of L. fortisetosa often flitted at a low height (5-110cm above the ground), and sometimes adhered to the outside of the white sweep nets. Apparently, the population density of winged L. fortisetosa is unrelated to that of the Japanese deer Cervus nippon Temminck. In late December, de-alate forms of both species were collected from the body of the dead host. Lipoptena fortisetosa were collected during winter in Japan for the first time. Attention should be paid to deer keds in Miyajima, since they are potential pests for humans. Miyajima can be a valuable field for studying interspecific relationships of these two species of deer keds.
