This paper presents a method for encoding and decoding images, especially medical images with the optimization of probability of cross points which are neighbor to the points of gray levels 2n. The base of this statement was presented in papers of the authors that proposed the effect of Gray coding on cross points. At first the effect of Gray codes is determined with an adjacent data set because of the characteristic of images being that the data do not change much in a specific area, then this effect is generalized with real data without losing the generality for their statistical characteristics, espescially in medical images which have many regions with the same gray scale. This effect makes bit states of cross points change from original data bits, so the probabilities of data bits on specific bit planes in cross point regions and then the entropies of messages are changed. These probabilities and entropies are estimated and compared with the probabilities and entropies of original data bits. This change of probability has important effects on encoding and decoding processes of lossless medical image compression.

We have been developing an automated image quality evaluation method (AIQEM) for quantitative evaluations of specks on the American College of Radiology (ACR) 156 mammographic phantom images. The AIQEM consists of the following two main steps:(a) Extracting speck shadows using a density gradient vector analysis and (b) analyzing a speck signal to noise ratio (SNR) and a size of a speck shadow to detect it as visible or not. In this paper, we describe experimental results of subjective evaluations by nine Japanese experienced radiologic technologists and the AIQEM on forty-two phantom images, and the AIQEM performance and reproductively. As initial results, the AIQEM sensitivities were 98% for 1 facility database and 100% for 21 facilities database for the 3rd group of specks, and 91% for 1 facility database and 95% for 21 facilities database for the 4th group of specks. The AIQEM reproductively for the 3rd group of specks was sufficient for the image quality evaluation. It was concluded that the AIQEM was an effective method for a quantitively image quality evaluation on the ACR 156 mammographic phantom.

The Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) Part 14 defines the Grayscale Standard Display Function (GSDF) as the display function which guarantees the image display consistency for display devices. In recent years, the DICOM GSDF has been applied to a wide range of display devices. However, the display function on operator's console monitors of digital diagnostic imaging modality is not clarified. Therefore, the consistency of a console monitor and other display monitors on a network may not be kept. The aim of this study is to analyze the display function on console monitors of CT /MRI. We measured the characteristic luminance response of the console Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) monitors using the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) digital test pattern and deduced the display function. As a result of analysis, the display function of the LCD monitors were not the GSDF but γ = 2.2. This result suggests that a digital image on a LCD monitor of CT/MRI could look different on other display monitors. The DICOM GSDF must be applied to a wide range of display devices including console monitors of CT/MRI.

In general, our phonation is controled by movement of a pair of vocal chords. Hence, paralyzing a side of vocal chord, which is called uni-lateral recurrent nerve paralysis, causes difficulties of shutting the glottis and phonation. To cure this disease, silicon or such material is packed into the throat around the vocal chords side by operation. As the operation result, it is expected that the glottis controlled by the diseased vocal chord side is shutting, and the phonation control is recovered by the other side of vocal chord. In this research, we developed a computational supporting system for the operation. Our system provide a function of measuring a volume of the respiratory tract using CT images of patient. Comparing the difference of the volumes of the respiratory tract between before and after the operation, we can evaluate the result of the operation quantitatively.
