Abstract At National Institute of Technology, Miyakonojo College (Miyakonojo Kosen), students take English Communication I,
English Communication II, and English Conversation class during the first two years. In each class, students use textbooks approved
by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The Ministry has issued Course of Study for senior high
schools, in which schools are required to appropriately use linguistic materials including approximately 900 words referring to seasons,
months, days of the week, time, weather, number and basic words related to daily life. Expanding vocabulary is essential part of
learning foreign languages, the process of which is not necessarily pleasant experience for learners because of time and energy
consumed for it. In order to make this process more positive and efficient, some knowledge of affix --prefix and suffix-- could help
especially for Japanese students since affix has functions similar to radicals in Japanese Kanji. This paper describes what kinds of
prefixes and suffixes are frequently found in words in one English textbook. Through this study, I reached the conclusion that prefix
mainly has a function of adding some meaning to the stem, while suffix has grammatical functions. I was also able to grasp the
frequency of the usage of individual affix. I hope this study would help the teaching staff expand their students’ vocabulary.
