Glass with the gehlenite composition (glassy gehlenite for short) is known as a main phase of granulated blastfurnace slag, and also as a noncrystalline part of aluminous cement. The activation effects, of Ca (OH)
2 on the hydration of synthesized glassy gehlenite was investigated and compared with NaOH..A mixture of CaCO
3, Al
2O
3 and SiO
2 in the mole ratio of C
2AS was melted in a radio-frequency electric furnace at 1700°C, and then quenched into water immediately. The hydration of glassy gehlenite was initiated by an activating agent such as NaOH or Ca (OH)
2. The concentration of various ions in the solution was measured as a function of time by using ICP, and ion chromatography. When glassy gehlenite was dispersed into suspension of Ca (OH)
2, the remarkable elution stage of Al (OH)
4- was observed in the hydration process, subsequently, C
2ASH
8 and C-S-H (I) were formed.
The binding energy of each atoms on the particle surface of unhydrated glass was obtained by ESCA. Hence, half width of spectrum of Si 2p orbital differed crystal and glassy gehlenite. It was recognized that the hydration of glassy gehlenite were depended by structure of particle surface.
