After the Word War II geography among the social studies become one of the subjects which most pupils and students dislike, particularly girl students. During the Meiji and the Taisho era, however, there was not such tendency in the subject of geography.
The hateful feeling againt the geographical studies is prevailing even among high school and college students. Now, it is time to consider the way of remedy in the teaching of geography.
The reasons why pupils and students hate the subjects of geography in the scope of social studies are considered as follows:
1) Primary school pupils don't know how to learn them.
2) There are too many items for junior high school students to study geography.
These two points are due to the social studies at primary schools have neither consistency nor coordination with those at junior high schools.
In using our special curriculum developed at the senior high school level, the disagreeable feeling against the geography acquired at the primary and junior high school levels was removed to the extent and the interests in geography expected at the primary school level were recovered. But it is found too late to let students feel interest in geography at high school level.
In order to promote the geographic education, we conclude that it is necessary to establish the consistency of the curriculum in the geographic education through the primary and the junior high school. For this performance the content of the social studies should be remedied first at the primary school level.
