The purpose of this study is to clarify the correspondence of existing shops to changing locational conditions due to the urbanization in Suzaka City, Nagano Prefecture, as an example of a small local cities.
The results of this study are summarized as follows:
    1) The retail agglomeration in Suzaka are shifted from deconcentration with three cores within inner city in 1950s to concentration to only one core in the district near the station in late 1980s. The inner city shopping streets except near the station were separated, reduced, and isolated. On the one hand, many private stores were concentrated to the surroundings of the big stores. At the same time, those of pedestrians within the inner city were decreased due to advanced motorization and residential conditions. The traffic flows of automobiles were also decreased except the district near the station because drivers tended to avoid crowded inner city roads. Due to those changes of locational conditions, both potential purchasing power and information providing power of the shopping streets except near the station are decreasing.
    2) The purchasing sense of residents in Suzaka changed for big stores tendency because they preferred selective shopping to nearby ones and they took a serious view of one-stop shopping. As results, consumers' destinations for shopping were increased at the big stores both in Suzaka and Nagano City but were decreased at the shopping streets within Suzaka. In spite of the raised numbers of consumers who required shopping at nearby stores in 1980s, the inner city stores were not able to increase consumer except for grocery and convenience goods because the big stores within Suzaka and Nagano City were come up consumer's minds first. The consumers in Takayama village and Obuse Town which belonged to the same Suzaka trade area had similar tendency to the selection.
    3) The existing shops tried to regain their consumers and to keep their businesses by several countermeasures such as establishment of tenanted shops in the big stores and moving close to them. Some other private stores began to make efforts with steady services or visiting sales using their shops as storages. Some other shops managed multiple businesses and kept existing sales network organized cooperated selling system to correspond large demand such as schools. The systematic policy of the small stores were different from the former shopping streets activities. They joined the voluntary chain store in order to increase consumers for offering low price goods and information by cooperated purchase and advertisement. The retail agglomeration with only one core in the district near the station has consequently occurred.
As discussed above, the spatial structure of retails in Suzaka are transforming on account of the countermeasures taken against the aggravation to locational condition by the existing shops and the invasion to local cities by the nationwide chain stores.

The purpose of this study is to clarify how field work is implemented in geographical education and also to clear up a factor which prescribe its popularity and decay. The study. was made by collecting a frame work paper on field work which be reserved in each high school, and at the same time by sending out questionnaire to and interview with high school teachers when the author analyzed a collected materials, following points appeared to be obvious.
In high school geographical education in Ehime, field work was popular around 1968 to 1975, in fact, the rate of doing field work was 37% in 1970. In those days, field work was done taking form such as out-door observation near school, suberb excursion by bus or joint excursion with geographical and geological classes. However, from 1975 or so excursion has declined rapidly and the rate of doing field work is only 4% in 1990.
As the cause of decline of field work, the author could mention some points: according to the revised curriculum geography has become an elective subject from a compulsly subject (1); having too many things for teachers and students to do because of too many schedules for the school and intensified guidance for entering university and school discipline (2); deterioration of traffic situation on account of progrss of motorization (3); problems which exist in a organization for geographcal teachers (4); decreasing interest in learning of students (5); and so on.
The author believes that for promoting and activating a fireld work in geographical education, above these points should be improved.
