The purpose of this paper is to study the multiple retailers and the setting up retail shops, from the sides of the management and the locational form, in the suburban area. The results are summarized as follows:
1) The percentage of branch shops in a major category of trade is higher than that in a minor, and it is increasing year by year.
2) In the suburban area of Hamamatsu city, after the car shops were acccumlated and supermakets were scattered in the 1960's, the number of retail shops have markedly increased.
3) Because the branch shops of multiple retailers were more expansible than the independent retail shops, the multiple retailers have rapidly affected retail activities in the suburban area. And the form of setting up shops is easily affected by the peculiarity of their items, their purchasing area and purchasing group.
