Indeed, in the United Kingdom, the Ministry of Education does neither issue such a syllabus as the Course of Studies in Japan, nor authorize the educational text books, but many other means or methods are taken in order to maintain and to develop their educational standard, General Certificate of Education is one of them.
I gave some examples of examinations of GCE concerning to the maps, and then described what and how maps are taught in junior and secondary schools of England and Wales. We are able to indicate many characteristics of their teaching maps. For instance,
(1) Ordinance Survey Maps are used step by step even in junior schools from the large scale maps to the smaller scale.
(2) Practical map works are given important places in geography tcaching from junior schools to sixth forms for example, children about 10 years old make the simple transect along the street near their school and examination papers GCE Advanced Level contain the questions concerning to the short compass traverse.
(3) Maps are taught standing firmly on the pupil's own experience.
(4) Map projections are chiefly taught in sixth forms containing their principles.
(5) Maps are taught together with the air photograph.
(6) Sketch maps are usually drawn by both teachers and pupils
