    Technologies of the electronic displays which transfer informations to the human's vision have an extremely important role in the present information community as a man-machine interface. Flat-panel displays have grown up in the past quarter century with the improvement of display characteristics and increase of information contents, and have created new services in electronic displays. This market is now consisted of both of the CRTs and flat-panel displays. The development of large panels and high information contents is a key for future population of high performance displays. The realization of these will offers a wide application service to many kinds of display terminals in information systems with their flexibilities capable of corresponding to various schemes of displays including new TVs in the home. It is an indispensable issue to collectively develope flat-panel display devices and systems including their manufacturing technologies.

    State of the art of fabrication methods of color filter for liquid crystal display is reviewed. Among the various methods, dyeing, pigment dispersion, electro deposition and printing are shown to demonstrate the mass production. The common problems required to color filter, i.e, pattern resolution, its repeatability, flatness and dust contamination are discussed, with relation to their resolving techniques.

    Various kinds of organic materials have been examined for alignment films. Among them, aromatic polyimides were chosen for their mechanical strength, heat- resistance and solvent- resistance. Aromatic polyimide must be baked at temperatures higher than 300°C. At such high temperatures, colored filters composed of organic polymer and dyes were damaged. Therefore, an alignmemt film which could be handled at temperatures lower than 180°C was expected. Japan Synthetic Rubber Co. has developed a new aliphatic cyclic polyimide which could be easily soluble in organic solvents like γ-butyrolactone, N-methylpyrrolidone for an alignment film of AM·LCDs. A thin film could be easily made using this soluble polyimide solution after evaporating solvent at temperatures lower than 180°C. Moreover, electric properties and anchoring energy of this aliphatic cyclic polyimide were excellent in comparison with other structure polyimides. On the other hand, alignment films for STN·LCD must have a high pretilt angle of 6-10°. As a result, new type polyimides consisting of polyimide and alkylamine with long alkyl chains were developed.

    In this paper, the general optical characteristics of polarizer, anti-glare layer and retardation film which are used for LCD have been summarized. In the case of the polarizer, the condition of iodine adsorption and orientation were examined to improve the polarization characteristics. For anti-glare layer, the sheet with inorganic multi coated larer was examined to reduce the reflection of the film surface. The retardation film has been developed for phase compensation of the STN-LCD. In the paper, we discuss about the fundamental principle of the birefringence of plastic films and suggest the ideal design for retardation films.

    Data security achieved by embedding the text data into images is indispensable in the transmission of the confidential information like private data through the telephotography. A method for unifying a text data into image is also effective for protecting the security information stored in a database. There are several reports dealing with the method for embedding the text data into an image having the gray levels. However, few studies on the unification of the binary images used in the maps on drawings were reported. We report a method embedding byte data, such as characters, in chain coded drawings.

    Recently, any monochrome scanner is required to establish automatic setup which can generate a halftone image on a film with stable quality by easy operation. This paper presents a method of automatic setting of highlight point, shadow point and gradation curve which are important elements for reproducing the halftone image. In this development, we studied the automatic setting by means of a systematic approach as follows: finding out reproduction characteristic made by skilled operatores on various kinds of originals; setting up an algorism which simulates the reproduction characteristic; and evaluating simulation ability of it. As a result, a halftone image of average reproduction characteristic has been obtained by the simulation algorism which includes the following features: setting a predetermined constant value of a cumulative density histogram to a predetermined constant value of halftone dot percentages on various kinds of originals with respect to highlight and shadow points; and varying a gradation curve dependent on a density range of the respective originals, and decreasing gradually the gradient of the curve at the highlight area.

    A various kinds of methods as a new system to improve the ink presetting technology have already been developed among several companies in the printing industry and some of them are actually brought into practice now. These kinds of systemes, however, are usually so expensive and complex that its investment cost is always a serious problem for many of the printing companies. Under these circumstances, most of the printing machines now in operation are equipped with the traditional type of ink fountain blade to supply the necessary ink to the fountain roller where a skilled operator is required to adjust the suitable amount of ink with the fountain key. We are now introducing a bland new system, “Film Blade Ink Preset System” where we prepare a specially cutting- in processed film blade made of polyester film with glue on one side of the blade to control the ink amount of the printing areas. By inserting this film blade between the ink fountain roller and the ink fountain blade at the ink fountain area, you can eliminate the adjustment procedure of the ink amount, and you can also expect quite a remarkable ink presetting effect without any of the reconstruction procedure on your present printing machines and their facilities.

    Color is investigated by spectrophotometric curve or CIE chromaticity diagram. Another important measure is “density”. Density is used in plate-making and printing quality control with various types of control scales, bars and wedges. These scales can evaluate many items such as dot gain, gray balance, trapping, etc. GATF devised a method to calculate “hue error, grayness and efficiency” of process color from density, then plotted data to a “color circle diagram”. By this method, we can recognize Japanese-made typical process inks meet ISO standard for colors.
