    In this paper the recent progress in the development of HDTV is reviewed mainly focusing on the activities of the CCIR, Japan, North America and Europe. Firstly main parameter values for the HDTV studio standard recommended by the CCIR are discussed, and then the present status of the development of HDTV studio equipment such as cameras including high sensitivity pick-up tubes and CCD devices, VTRs and displays is reviewed. Secondly the development of analog and digital transmission systems of HDTV signals for satellite broadcasting, terrestrial broadcasting and CATV is described. Finally activities for the harmonization of HDTV standards between broadcast and non-broadcast uses are introduced and examples of non-broadcast application of HDTV are briefly described.

    Hivision, an HDTV system developed by NHK, Japan Broadcasting Corporation, is now going to start its broadcasting career as a new television medium. In virtue of its picture format carefully constructed on the basis of human vision, it can be also used as a multi-media infrastructure for image information processing and displays of the other disciplines, including commercial printing. This article summarizes the experiences obtained in course of tests in Hivision Printing and Hivision Graphics, the image data conversions from Hivision to Printing and vice versa, respectively. It also refers to the difficulties encountered which are inherent to the differences in the natures of moving and static images. The future prospect of the electronic publishing via/to Hivision is discussed with the reference to interface, software and the information content to be conveyed.

    Poly (p-hydroxystyrene-3, 5-diazidobenzate) (PHS-DAB) which had two photoreactive sites, two azido group in one benzene ring, was newly synthesized in order to obtain photosensitive polymer developable by aqueous solution. Poly (p-hydroxystyrene-p-azidobenzate) (PHS-MAB) which had one azido group in one benzene ring, was also synthesized to compare the photosensitivity and solubility with it. Their photochemical behaviour was investigated and the following results were obtained. 1) PHS-DAB showed an absorption maximum at -250 and -320nm and it was certainly photoreacted even if the exposure light of 250W high pressure Hg lamp was filtered by the polyester film (-120μm). 2) In the case of low concentration (<10%) of photochemical group into the polymer, PHS-DAB showed paticularly photosensitivity higher than PHS-MAB in the rate of formation of insoluble part and in the gray scale method. 3) PHS-DAB was easily disolved in aqueous ethanol and aqueous NaOH solution and the degree of its insolubilization increased with increasing the content of photosensitive groups in the polymer.

    It is most important and fundamental problems to measure the image density for image analysis and evaluation. In this paper, definition of various densities such as integral density, analytical density, micro density etc. are described. Relations between reflection density and micro density (density of small area) for photographic film, half-tone printing and digital printing are also discussed, and some experimental results are shown.
