A colored light sensitive transfer material composed of a pell-off support, an alkaline soluble thermoplastic resin layer, a inter-layer having a low oxygen permeability, and a colored light sensitive resin layer arranged in this order has been prepared. A process for the formation of an image which comprised laminating the colored light sensitive resin layer and the permanent support (e. g. glass plate) to each other under heating and pressure, peeling off the peel-off support of the material, imagewisely exposing the light sensitive resin layer and developing the material to form an image on the permanent support was discussed. The colored light sensitive transfer material having the thermoplastic resin layer was able imagewisely to transfer to the permanent support without poor transfer due to minute dusts, bubbles, an unevenness of the support, and so on. In addition, a self-alignment process for the formation of a light shielding pattern, i.e. black matrix, was also discussed. These processes can simplify the formation of the high quality color filter for the liquid crystal display.
