The history and the future of the digital font technology are presented. Today, the main problems of the digital font have been solved, but some items, for example, the font composition, the code allocation, and also the input method of the external kanji are still open for future resolution.
This paper gives brief introduction about the utilization of communication technology and the movement of data compression technology in workflow of Graphic Arts Industry. Commercial VAN service for the printing workflow begins already, and this gives influence to management method of printing company in addition to a change of prepress workflow. Progress of data compression technology increasingly promotes such an application of communication technology. JPEG2000 will give influence to remote proofing and data collaboration. Furthermore, DR compression method developed by Electrotechnical Laboratory in Japan is being utilized in prospective On Demand Publishing in addition to current workflow.
As the electronic networks grow, the environment in that we can enjoy digital contents, such as texts, images and even movies, has been developed. Digital data is easy to copy/edit without loss of quality essentially. Because of this character, the importance of copyright protection has been raised and discussed. The demand of a new framework for protecting copyright on networks is rapidly growing. In this paper, firstly, we review recent trends of copyright protection standards and technologies. Then, we describe digital watermark technique and capsule technique in detail.
The flow of the printing production processes changed owing to the progress of the digital technology. As for the image output and proof as well, it is the same. Screening is one of the processes to which digital technology has given strong influence. Electronic technology has enabled to generate the halftone dot of the various forms. Today, various AM (Amplitude Modulation) halftone dot, FM (Frequency Modulation) halftone dot and hybrid dot combined with both are used. The spread of CTP has made it main stream to form a plate directly from the digital data. Color proofers use various technology. Having a good many kind of color proofers appeared for CTP process, CMS has increased the importance as a key factor of the process.
Many standardizing activities are carried out about imaging devices in office and home. It is reported that the progress of digital imaging technology makes the boundary of imaging media ambiguous, and the importance of the standardizing activities is increasing. The standardizing activities of ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 28 (Office Equipment) and IEC TC 100 (Multimedia Systems and Equipment) are reported.
Two-dimensional distribution of density of paper sheets has been examined by using a pair of laser displacement sensors and soft X-ray radiography. A pair of laser displacement sensors from both sides of a paper sheet driven by a coordinate scanning table gives the discrete local thickness. Soft X-ray radiography draws the local mass distribution of the same sample. Division of the mass by the thickness with the precise geographic control, being the density, can thereafter be obtained. A group of NBKP hand sheets with three degrees of flocculation and super calendering pressures each were prepared as samples. Each of them has different degree of flocculation and density. Local distributions of thickness by laser displacement sensor caliper and light transmission were highly similar to each other (R=0.80). Local distribution of basis weight by soft X-ray radiography and light transmission, and that of soft X-ray radiography and thickness by laser calipers were to some extent similar to each other (R=0.65). Light transmission method could therefore be a safe simple and easy method that can substitute the more precise methods. Local density at flocculated parts was 20-30% higher than average. This result suggests floc is an important factor as physical property of paper and so those who are familiar to handle paper hate flocs when they rank paper visually. Local density distribution has low correlation with basis weight, thickness and light transmission. Hence density distribution regards as an independent physical property of paper.
