In recent years, there has been increased interest in the use of wearable devices as next-generation information terminal devices, healthcare devices, and medical devices that are thin, light, and adaptable to various shapes, and that do not break when dropped. Several reports on wearable electronics have already been published. However, there are still many issues that need to be solved to industrialize these wearable electronics. We believe that printed electronics technology will help wearable devices to be effectively manufactured and be diffused into everyday life. However, conventional silicon devices are also necessary for producing highly usable wearable devices. Therefore, there is a need for reasonably hybridizing printed technology to conventional silicon technology to produce excellent wearable devices.

In this review, brain-computer interface technologies based on a non-invasive electroencephalogram measurement for the livelihood support of disabled persons are described. The spatial resolution of the brain activity is relatively low in an invasive measurement, but a non-invasive measurement is safe and handy; therefore, non-invasive measurements are increasingly being used as living body sensors. On the other hand, brain-computer interface (BCI) technologies aim to accurately identify a person's intention at a high speed; and, complicated machine operations may extract a considerable amount of intention information as the switch information. In addition, by combining these technologies with robots and virtual reality, because BCI provides more faithful feedback, people with disabilities can even regain their kinesthetic sense.

This article introduces the history of design innovation and technical development of manufacturing processes of Japanese gravure stamps, such as conventional gravure and automatic electronic engraving methods. Further, it describes some technical characteristics or features of the recently released gravure stamps in Japan, such as metallic multi-image printing and iridescent peal printing, as a means of the most excellent and appropriate printing method to express and recreate the beautiful design of postage stamps.

This paper reviews the manufacturing technology for architectural materials decorated by printing. Printing technology is used efficiently in various product areas. Here, we introduce decorated products that are used as architectural materials and their manufacturing process. We have been producing a wide range of architectural materials by printing, such as materials used for interiors including floors, doors, and closets. In the case of printed architectural materials, the gravure printing process has been used for attractively replicating the appearance and the texture of real wood. The gravure printing process for artificial architectural materials adopts some specific methods (e.g., manipulating images to achieve seamless web printing with synthetic photography) for simulating natural wood. Furthermore, architectural materials need to be not only beautiful but also durable. As a means of achieving mechanical, physical (e.g., heat and humidity) , and chemical durability, the electron beam curing technology has been widely applied to the manufacturing of architectural materials in our company. In addition, environmentally safe materials are required; in particular, interior building materials should produce reduced levels of indoor air pollutants. In order to create healthier and more comfortable lifestyles, we will continue to develop sophisticated manufacturing technology for architectural materials decorated by printing.

Nowadays, all types of printed matter have been digitalized. Books have changed to electronic books and signboards in the streets have changed to digital signage. It is difficult to recognize the value of printing as it is only seen as a means of transmitting information. However, according to SO-KEN Co. Ltd., in the future, people will seek high-value-added printing methods to influence the five senses, including taste, touch, and sight. Therefore, the use of printing as only an "information tool" will decline, but we believe that "bodily sensible printing" that will directly affect five of the human senses will attract considerable attention in the printing industry.

The development of VDP (Variable Data Printing) technologies using digital printers is progressing rapidly these days. Further, customer needs with respect to the style of printing production are becoming complicated. In this report, we introduce our own production workflow, which is one of the most complicated variable printing methods. We have focused on the printing process and achieved an optimized workflow. In this flow, we need to print a huge volume of variable data within a short delivery period. One of this workflow's features is the use of the PPML format, which can process variable data efficiently in order to accelerate RIP processing. In addition, we have realized an automated workflow by using the JDF⁄JMF technology. As a result, the production schedule and the submission of JOBs to printers are controlled by our system without manual operations and mistakes. This topic is attractive for us. And we succeed this challenge via promotion of the digital printing technology.

Digital signage is a visual medium used outside of a building. In order to clarify the issues related to digital signage and provide an overview of digital signage, the printing industry should actively participate in the digital signage market.
