How did Takuboku, who was highly estemated as a critic of Japanese naturalism, think of the problem of IE and try to Solve it? As you know, the main theme of the naturalism was the struggle against the feudalistic IE. The problems of IE were great and closest that befell those who were awakened to the modern ego. By grappling with these problems, naturalistic literature rendered a distinguished service and established the modernization of Japanese literature. But they had but little understanding about IE under the Tenno System in the age of Meiji 40, so that their struggle did not spread and sesulted in the birth or Watakushi Shosetsu which disclosed their lives. The change of Shimazaki Toson from Hakai and IE to Shinsei was typical in Japanese naturalism in literature. The naturalism was not concerned with the Imperial nations which were necessary for the system of IE. He criticized this and considered the authority of the Imperial nation as an enemy. IE, against which naturalists struggled, was great and old. On the contrary Takuboku,s IE was small. It can be said however, that he, Takuboku, understanding and struggle against it more completely than any other naturalist. He did not consider only IE but foundamental problems which included the Imperial nation and tried to find ifs solution in socialism. It is unhappy for modern literature in Japan that they could not rightly value and follow their struggle of Takuboku.
