Shigemori who was sincere and learned in A Story of the Heike was also admired as a prophet who was level-headed and foretold the ruin of the Heike. However, according to one text, he was an almost obstinate royalist and nationalist. Though faithful, he acted craftly and selfishly, and even had plutocracy. In this sense he was a realist who had a lot of contradictions. But his nobility of character and his ideas of Confucianism and nationalism were intentionaly supplemented in later years. His militant character like as he threatened his enemy to protect his family had been admitted since in early texts. Gradually his features as a praphet was eliminated, but on the other hand, his secular humanity was emphasized. Thus, transfiguration of his image shows that he took Kiyomori's side at first, but later he was made critical according to the author's idea.
