Monzaemon Chikamatsu wrote his new contemporary domestic play Sonezaki Shinju in 1703, This play shows us that he came to bring out a new style and manner in his dramatical work. What is, then, the new dramatical style and manner in Sonezaki Shinju? The first scene of this play, which is called "Kannonmeguri" represents them most effectively. This scene could be a sort of "Michiyuki" scene, an assumed one. And this scene gets deeply involved in the subject matter of the play, that is "the death of O-Hatsu and Tokubei's" which the writer tried to pursue most deliberately. Seen from this point of view, "Kannonmeguri" scene is, in no way, a merely simple part of the play, or an ornamental addition, On the contrary, this scene and the whole structure of the play are inseparably connected with each other. In this essay, I tried a detailed explanation on the statement above, mentioning three various types of the produce of this play, a puppet play as in Bunraku in February 1981, a movie in 1978,and the last, rock-n'-roll music in 1980.
