The Japanese language education in high schools is in confusiontoday. Some students try to disturb the class, others just absent-mindedly wait for the end of the class with no interest in the lesson. In this state it has been becoming more and more difficult to have the students know the significance of learning especially classical literature and literature in Chinese character. And as long as the students.can not find the significance of learning, it also happens in the field of modern Japanese language that they are going to be estranged from literature. Every literary work should be read as a text book and when students find something common with the present time in its character, it really helps as a teaching material.Because it isn't very important that the work was written by any famous writer or that it has a historical value. Considering from the viewpoint above, Nishio Minoru's theory of literature education,in which he made stress upon " appreciation ", should be highly evaluated. Of course it is not that Nishio's theory can be directly adopted to school education. Each teacher should make his own method of literature education according to the state of his students, while keeping Nishio's . theory in mind. I wrote this report, adding some paragraphs to the oral report which I made at the second conference of the Japanese language education division.
