In Tosa Nikki the author uses some pairs of confronting ideas such as man versus woman, Chinese poetry versus Japanese "waka", public versus private, etc.., in the structure of fabrication by pretending to be a female writer, and tries to make his inner "systems" out. And by doing so, he finally obtains his "self", which he realizes to be also one of the "systems", because there can be no such things as a "self" of pure culture. The closing remarks, "Tomare koomare toku yaburitem" (Anyway, I'm going to tear it quickly), shows the relationship between the" systems" and the "expressions".
