In Todo-books such as the Kakuitsu-text, Mongaku is described to have played a very important part when Yoritomo raised an army. Mongaku is regarded as the man who planned a war and suggested that Yoritomo start it. While in Enkei's text -one of the non-Todo-books- we find a great deal of description about Yoritomo and his deep-rooted determination as well as Mongaku's intentions. There is an opinion that in this text the leadership is shifted from Mongaku to Yoritomo. In my opinion, however, the more the author describes Yoritomo's feelings, the more significant Mongaku's words and actions become. I've discussed how the structure in Enkei's text makes Mongaku, as well as Yoritomo, a strong character.

"Kai-no-Oriya" in Mon is a peddler who comes to the cities from a small village at the foot of Mt. Fuji, carrying woven materials on his back. The author created this character as a device to remind Sosuke of his past and to derive his realization of his sin which has long been hidden in his subconsciousness. At the same time he presented the poverty and thriftiness of a real Japanese in order to ask the city people to econsider. By describing the ideas Sosuke has in the intervals of his everyday life, which lead him to experience "Kotonaru Jikan," Sosuke seems to imply that man is living, always having apprehensions in life as well as in social stability.

It was Sohei that Hyakken associated with as his closest friend among all the pupils of Soseki. When Hyakken was depressed and at a loss in the dreary world of Meido (Hades), Sohei suggested that there could be other possibilities for him to write about. Inspired by Sohei, Hyakken stepped out into the humrous literature of Hyakkien Zuihitsu, which was written, based on his friendship with Sohei.

Reading La Derniere Classe, some pupils feel perplexed, which seems to be caused by the unbalanced vocabulary of Daudt's and to be a quite natural reaction. Though he wrote this work as a tragedy of Alsace, Daudet did not put himself in the place of Alsace people. We must reconsider the way of using this work as a teaching material by having a critical discussion on it.

There are two farewells in this story; the first between Shimako and her father who goes to the war and the second between a calf and its mother which goes to work in the mountains. In the last part of the story there is description about Shimako who becomes a cow and cries "Moo!" I've described why Shimako becomes a cow, by concentrating on the two points. First, Shimako realizes that there is no differences between the sorrow of a man and that of a cow when she sees the tears in the cow's eyes. Second, Shimako couldn't express her feelings with any words except the cry of a cow.
