"Hinpuku-Ron" (Thoughts on Poverty and Wealth) in Ugetsu Monogatari shouldn't be read as merely Akinari's discussion on money. While discussing the ethics of the rich, he admires his late foster father, Ueda Mosuke. Akinari has decided not to become a merchant, which is against his foster father's wish. However, Akinari never stops respecting or thanking his foster father. In "Hinpuku- Ron", Akinari describes Mosuke as a great person, ethical as well as talented in making money, who has set an example for wealthy people.

In my opinion, the value of literary works should be discussed based on the works alone. Akinari's works are no exception. However, studies of authors are not negligible. Akinari's thoughts should be understood through the expressions used in his works. Here a suggestion of Akinari study is made by interpreting each word and phrase of the opening of Harusame Monogatari. This story, whose interpretation has not yet been fixed, has been regarded as difficult reading.

In the field of the Kinsei (Edo Period) prose and its study, there is a tremendous gap between the novel category and the essay category. Many attractive expressions are buried in this gap which can not be included in either of the two categories. I create a third category, "Bunsho" between the conventional novel category, "Shosetsu" and the essay category, "Kidan". I discuss how the theme of a fox is treated in the three different categories, focusing on the fox in Oriorigusa by Takebe Ayatari.

By pursuing the real meaning of the traditional order, which has become more and more skeletonized, the establishment of a unique world of Norinaga is illustrated in his theory, "Conception of Truth." In the general conception of truth, the individual truth is transcedental. Norinaga assumes that the real conception of truth should be understood through archaism. As a result, he captures the spirit of Waka poems which exists in human hearts despite individuality and time. Needless to say, his conception of truth is always closely connected with his desire to go back to the traditional order.
