Makura-no Soshi has had a tendency to be discussed without any criterion. I made an attempt to discuss the work within the frame of a personal diary and to illustrate the changes from the former part to the latter. Its poetical terminology is analyzed as well. In the former part of the work, Seishonagon faithfully uses the terms found in the anthologies compiled by lmperial command. In the latter part, however, she not only deviates from the use of these Waka poem terms, but estranges herself from the Waka poem itself. It is proven that this change corresponds to the change of the relationship between Seishonagon and Teishi.

In the Kitayama scene in the volume of "iyakamurasaki," some suggestive symbols are recognized. The high priest, who is supposed to give medical treatment to Genji, appears from the cave with an air of a dying man. This may symbolize Genji's death, and at the same time the midwife who helps Genji's rebirth. The Kaguyahime symbols, in the form of Wakamurasaki-no, kimi and Genji, give direction and power to start the story. Observed is the author's tremendous ability of creation that exceeds the symbollsm innuenced by Yusenkutsu.

Kaoru loses his sweetheart Oigimi forever. His figure of fretfulness is described in a condensed way in the narrative of "Ashizuri." In Oigimi Monogatari, Oigimi's death is lamented by quoting the phrases from the 6th Dan of Ise Monogatari. Moreover, the relationship between the two isolated lovers (who cannot be connected with each other even by the medium of Uta poems)is vividly described. Above all, the quotations from the 49th and 107th Dan, (which are basically the stories of lively flirtation of a man and woman who are connected with each other by means of Uta poems)function as an element to drive Oigimi to death. Genji Monogatari in no time seems to have estranged itself from Uta poems and reached the stage where it contradicts the concept of the Uta monogatari.

It is very interesting that there was a publishing of the Katakana text of Inga Monogatari during the process of development from the Hiragana text of Inga Monogatari to Otogi Boko. This is an attempt to prove that the criticism in this Katakana text is quite reasonable and practical. The innerprocess of how these characteristics of the Katakana text helped establish fiction as a system and came to take on an important literary significance, is illustrated.

In general theatrical history, Joko is placed as one of the minor dramatists who were active only during the short vacancy between Great Nanboku's death and the appearance of Kawatake Mokuami, who finally grasped a clue to the theatrical plays of the new type. Therefore, while Joko and Mokuami are compared with each other, only the two works of Joko in his early stage are discussed in comparison with all the works of Mokuami's. That it is not fair is proven by the fact that Joko continued writing dralnas until the end of his life in the 14th year after the Restoration. This is an attempt to pursue the changes in his methods of gathering materials and in his conscientiousness as a dramatist, and to illustrate the characteristics of his works through the study of a couple of Joko's works in his later years.

This play, which consists of ten scenes, has a big gap between the first nine scene and the final scene. There are two different attitudes among researchers: one is to regard the finalscene as unnecessary, and the other is to insist that it is indispensable in spite of the gap. This is an attempt to support the second opinion, and to point out the errors and ambiguity of the first attitude by explaining the sjgnificance of the tenth scene.
