Dialogue in kiterature classes has brought little desirable effect. Two reasons are pointed out: one, lack of a standard of values about what to discuss, and two, the students make little effort to analyze the historical and social background of literary works. By pursuing what makes the students silent orwhat makes them talk a lot without saying anything, I attempt to find a clue to restore meaningful dialogues in the classes.

Before talking aboUt literature teaching that inspires dialogue, it is required that the students, who are to have dialogues, have enough experiences of language and exptessions. In order that they will obtain these experiences, teachers should motivate the students to have awareness of the issues in all teaching materials, and to explain what they feel in exact expressions. What the students feel and think are illustrated, focusing on Hidaka Rokuro's remarks in his two works, "Concerning Youth" and "Talking about Personal Experiences".

Students read a literary work and observe the world written in it through the eyes of the character in the work. At that time the reader's ego changes into the "antagonist", which has been 'often discussed recently. The concept of this "interior antagonist" is illustrated, as well as the "exterior antagonist". Concerning Sementodaru no naka no Tegami (The Letter in the Cement Barre), whose interpretation should not be decided in one way, my opinion is explained as something different from the common view.
