It has been said that although a great number of revenge novels ware produced during the Kinsei period, they can be appreciated only for their small devices because they are all in the same pattern. However, judging from the fact that they were produced in great quantity, there must have been some essential attractiveness in the revenge novels. In this essay, by leaving out small devices and extracting the fixed form, an analysis is made to prove the revenge novels, while maintaining this fixed form, always had a secondary theme basides revenge. The meaning of the revenge novels in the Kinsei period is discussedas well.
