The factual report of the Great Fire of Meireki in Edo was what the readers of the time most wanted to possess. The editor Kono Michikiyo responded to their needs by asking Asai Ryoi, one of the most popular writers of the day, to write Musashiabumi, the report on the calamitous effects of the fire, and Edo Meishoki, a guidebook to the city of Edo whose outlook was drastically altered. Kono Michikiyo also attempted to publish Shinpan Bushu Edo no Zu, (a map of the city of Edo) after the great fire, to sell these three books in a set.

Saikaku Shokokuhanashi(1685) is catalogued under the title of Kinnen Shokokuhanashi, or Ogeba; in the back of the book, the letter "o" also appears. From these facts, the work's initial name is assumed to be Ogeba. What is the reason for this strange naming? Why was the title changed? Can we still accept the conventional explanation that Saikaku followed the example of Ujishui Monogatari? From these viewpoints and through a concrete verification, I propose to decode the initial meaning and perversity indicated in the title Ogeba, for the purpose of examining the essence of Saikaku as Media.

Yomihon in the Edo period was a text produced as a commodity, for that reason, its jacket and blurb external to the written content are also designd as part of the text to be read. In this paper, I have attempted to argue that in the case of Edo Yomihon, a format was prescribed as a result of the adjusted relation between the author and the publisher through the analysis of an announcement of the new book, and that a market value alone ensured the book's charactor as media. In this way, I have revealed that the "anther" was not able to create a book without internalizing the structure of publication and marketting within him and adopting the designated format.

The motif of a Buddhist statue discovered from water, found in "Yoshinodera Engi"(the Origin of Yoshino Temple), the fifth episode of the first volume of Nihon Ryoiki, frequently appears in the classical Chinese texts related to Buddhism. The legend of "a discovered Buddhist statue" is inseparably intertwined with the legend of Aiikuo. Aiikuo, in this context, is understood as an embodiment of the ideal of state Buddihism in the domain of the ancient East-Asian Buddhist culture. As such an understanding smoothly combines with the ideals of the "origin" of state Buddhism and the eastward advance of Buddhism and emerges as a repeatedly-enacted worldview, it informs the formation of the style of Buddhist tales.
