What is the aim of the literature class? I think that it is to help students create themselves through reading fiction. In this activity, they can discover new selfhood and develop fresh sensibility and perception. In our homogeneous society, young people are always in danger of being standardized, so that many of them, frustrated in seeking their own self, are forced to be content with identities that are socially imposed upon them. The question is thus to find the way to arouse them out of their standardized identities. I will try to consider it in this report of my class on a linked verse.

Yogaku-Koyo (1882), an authorized textbook of morals, was compiled under immediate influence of Kyogaku-Seishi (1879), which marked the first direct step of the Emperor system into the public education area. In Yogaku-Koyo, an episode of Taiheiki-the father-son story of Kusunoki-Masasige and -Masatsura-is featured. The episode had been reprinted in other textbooks and so used as an ideological device of Imperialism until the end of World War II. Its content is, however, quite different from the original as it underwent a historical transformation. More simply, it was remade into a representation of imperialistic ideologies and cultural chauvinism. Thus inscribing this representation into the minds of the youth to make them "faithful" military subjects, the ante-bellum education system created the nation's ideological matrix.

In this essay I will try to argue about the problematic aspects of the epistemological development of language as a "mother tongue" in modern Japan. I will consider these aspects in the following terms; the origin and infusion of the modern concept of "Japanese"; inculcation of a fictitious linguistic unity; linguistic imperialism amid tensions in relation to other colonial languages and the conceptual and theoretical transformation of the Japanese language concomittant with colonization; finally, the ideological motives implied in the present-day reconstruction of "correct" Japanese.

How was "episteme" articulated, integrated and spread in Edo culture? What part did it have in forming modern literature? Now seems to be the time when we should make some attempt to grasp the meaning of the epistemological configuration of the age. In this sense, it is important to focus on those encyclopaedias which were compiled during the Edo Era, because they played a central role in making the system of knowledge. In this essay, I will consider the relationship between Kyoden-yomihon and Kinmokoji-yogen as one example.
