In critical periods, when old values became unsteady and the nation seemed to be decadent, popular anxiety always found its expression in the Buddhist idea of latter days called "mappou." Of course, the tone of the idea was dominantly pessimistic, but there was some positive reaction. That could be found in a series of discourses on the three major places of Buddhism generally called "sangoku" - India, China, and Japan. Those discourses not only dealt with the spatial development of Buddhism but also had the faith that millennium would arrive in the terminal stage. There the terminal stage meant Japan, which was the last place that Buddhism reached. The "mappou" idea was thus adapted for the national supremacy of Japan.

In the dominant atmosphere of decadence of the 1000s, which was called the age of "mappou," there was some expectation of something new. As is typically seen in Rakuyo-dengaku-ki, in the midst of social uncertainty, a powerful desire for new order could be felt. This is also the case with Sarashina-nikki and Tsutsumi-chunagon-monogatari. The strong will which Koshojo shows in Sarashina-nikki, the active and masculine nature of the princess of "Mushi-mezuru-himegimi," an extraordinary faith in the imaginary which is the theme of "Hanada-no-nyogo" and "Yoshinashigoto" - all of them indicate the resistance to the decadent age and the attempt to find an alternative way.

In art history, the scroll pictures of Yamai-zoshi, which was completed in the late twelfth century, have been categorized into the group of religious works of art rendered in a realistic style. If they are seen not as artistic images but as historical representations, however, uncertain feelings in the transition from the Ancient to the Middle Ages, when aristocracy was falling into decline, can be read in those pictures. This essay will thus examine the eschatological representations of Yamai-zoshi.

The regeneration of Nara as the capital in the Middle Ages was ironically brought about by the great fire which turned it into utter ruins. The destruction of the capital was so complete and shocking that it even had a great influence on the eschatological tone of Heike-monogatari. But the disaster stimulated the will to a remarkable reconstruction all the more for the tremendous damage it had done. The will was embodied in literature as well as in architecture. This was the case with the writings of spiritural experiences and religious morals the Kasuga Shrine sect energetically produced. Here, tracing the development of religious literature in Nara, I will show the process in which the cultural rebirth of the capital was being made.

The eschatological atmosphere was spread over the country in the Middle Ages by the two pessimistic worldviews - "mappou" and "hendo." They also had a great influence on literature. Indeed, most of waka poems at that time shared the sense of crisis seen in the "mappou" idea. Meanwhile, the "hendo" worldview, which was more politically related to the critical consciousness of the nation, gave rise to the etymological interpretation of the word "waka" (according to it, it came from "yawaragu-uta" or a kind poem), which in turn contributed much to the ideology of benign sovereignty.

In Noda-bunsho, the collection of ancient documents, there are legal papers which were written by Sasaki-Saburo-Nagatsuna, a descendant of the famous samurai warrior Sasaki-Saburo-Moritsuna, when he made appeals to authorities in the 21st year of the Oei Period. His appeals not only described his own personal troubles but gave a certain expression to social anxiety about the samurai government of the age. The aim of this essay is first to prove the credibility of Noda-bunsho as historical material, then to examine the state of the samurai government represented in Sasaki's appeals, and finally to relate it to the social function of Heike-monogatari.
