Liaisons or illicit love affairs are, needless to say, the central theme of Genji-monogatari. Hikaru-Genji, the amorous hero, falls in love and has intercourse with many women, among whom Fujitsubo, Oboro-dukiyo, and Onna-Sannomiya are most well-known. But, interestingly enough, in most of these love affairs illness has a vital part. During his affairs with Fujitsubo and Oboro-dukiyo, the disease called "Warawa-yami" (a kind of "ague") attacked Genji. The point of this essay is to examine the narrative function of illness and to see how it reflects the age of Genji-monogatari.
