In the "Eawase" Part of Genji-monogarari Saigu-no-Nyogo starts to serve at the court of the Emperor Reizei, and finally in "Otome" Part she becomes an empress called Reizeicho-Chugu. Interestingly enough, the empress in fiction is a mixture of the two actual persons, Kishi-Nyoou and Ou-no-Nyogo. The former is a well-known model, but the latter has not been paid enough attention. In fact Ou-no-Nyogo or Hiroko-Nyoou, a child of Prince Yasuakira, had a great influence on Murasaki-Shikibu in the creation of childless Saigu-no-Nyogo. Thus she is an important historical figure to understand the Reizei episode of Genji-monogatari.

There has been a controversy over who wrote the afterward of "Hanada-no-nyougo" in Tsutsumi-Chunagon-monogataari, the author or the transcriber. But in reading the afterward, as the key phrase "kikishikoto (as far as I know)" suggests, it seems to be wrong to assume that there must be a specific meaning intended by a single author. Rather, as I will demonstrate here, one can read it as a polyphonic text which is open to plural interpretations.

Hanagasa-Bunkyo the Second was Robun Kanagaki's favored disciple and a democratic popular writer in the second decade of the Meiji Period or in the earliest years of Japanese modern literature. He was well-known for his political novel Saishi-kajin: Keisetsu-bidan and especially for Soshi-no-fuchin-geigi-no-kuraku: Iro-no-kakumei, a scandalous story about the assassination of a prefectural governor. He was also a practitioner of his own socialistic theory, for he worked hard as a labor leader in Eiri-Jiyu Publishing Company. In this article, I will follow his literary career as a committed writer at the dawn of modern literature.

The aim of this article is to analyze the way of expression and narration in the autobiographical essays in Seitou, the earliest feminist magazine in Japan. Probably because of increasing readership, after the fifth volume there begin to appear a new type of essays in which the authors see themselves more objectively or write about their own experiences through persons. This is a very important moment when the members of the magazine made up their mind to be more realistic and political in order to change male-centered society though writing.

In "Hana-no-machi" Masuji Ibuse described the "everyday life" of Singapore that was then called Shonan under Japanese rule. The story was published in 1943, and at first glance it seems to be one of those representations of the southern colonies that deceptively emphasized their paradise-like conditions. Indeed, it has been often regarded as an excellent sketch of daily life in the peaceful exotic place. But the author critically showed the ideological effect of colonialism on the native language by foregrounding linguistic confusion and deterioration. Thus Ibuse not descriptively but linguistically pointed out the cruelty and repressiveness of imperialism beneath the surface of "peaceful everyday life."
